PFAW: Help air "Save the Fillibuster" TV Ads
SUPREME COURT CAMPAIGN -- People For the American Way
April 15, 2005

This Sunday, the right-wing Judicial Confirmation Network, a
well-funded booster group for President Bush's judicial picks,
plans to unleash a vicious new television ad from the same media
assault team behind last year's "Swift Boat" ad campaign. We
want you to be ready to hold your stomach and help respond
aggressively to their smears.

Their inflammatory and wildly misleading ad falsely claims that
"arrogant judges" are attacking God and American values and
protecting child pornography.

There's more - outrageously, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist
is lending his name to blatant religious McCarthyism. The
following Sunday, April 24, he and Radical Right leaders like
James Dobson will participate in a pro-"nuclear option" event to
be beamed into hundreds, perhaps thousands, of churches
nationwide.

Disagreements and arguments are part of politics. But inciting
and exploiting religious division for political gain is wrong.
Since Sen. Frist seems to have misplaced his moral compass, we
must step in and demand that he disassociate himself, his
office, and the Senate from these attempts to manipulate
religion for political purposes.

Read our letter calling for Sen. Frist to bow out of this event
and apologize:

You can also help respond to the Judicial Confirmation
Network's ad. People For is trying something bold:
buying airtime in a dozen major markets during Sunday morning
network news programs. Our "Mr. Smith" ad will be side by side
with the far right's newest untruths, giving Americans a clear
view of this battle.

This is a very expensive, but very necessary, escalation in our
air campaign to save the checks and balances that the filibuster
provides. Please dig deep to make sure the Radical Right's
counter-offensive is answered immediately and effectively. You
can make a donation here:

Sen. Frist's telecast and this new attack ad are truly just the
tip of the iceberg. Extremists in Congress are savaging judges
to distract Americans from efforts to pack the courts with right-
wing ideological activists who will do the bidding of the far
right. And, as our eye-witness report from last week's
"Confronting the Judicial War of Faith" confirms, there is no
tactic or rhetoric too low for them to use to destroy our
independent courts and the checks and balances that protect
them. Conference attendees even heard right-wing author and
attorney Edwin Vieira appear to suggest death for judges whose
rulings conflict with far-right ideology, ominously paraphrasing
Joseph Stalin's quote, "Death solves all problems: no man, no
problem." Read the report here:

Fight back by calling Sen. Frist and giving what you can to air
our "Mr. Smith" ad this Sunday and as long as it takes to win.

In appreciation for all you do,
Ralph G. Neas
President
