She'll get the nom if she runs.

The pubs will field a bad candidate. On top of that, he/she will emerge tarnished after a bruising primary. Nuts like Brownback will push everyone to the extreme right. The radical side of the GOP will be on full display.

Senator Clinton has star power, charisma, and that Clinton name. It's a brand name in American politics. It's a two for one deal.

Remember, President Clinton left office with high approval ratings, far higher that shrub's.

27. Believe me. I don't fall for right wing BS. This is the truth
because of the relentless attacks on both of the Clintons during the 90s, even people who are moderate and uninvolved have a negative opinion of the Clintons, especially Hillary.

Also, Hillary running is a right wing dream. Why do you think they spent so much money and effort on conspiracy theories that end in Hillary being our next president?

He's good at appearing moderate and comes across well. He just does.

You buy right into the right wing spin when it comes to the Clintons. They are two of the most beloved figures in American politics.

What's wrong with you?

16. What's wrong with me? Wake up, dammit
Look around sometime. Try talking to some moderates.

Personally, I like and respect Bill. I like Hillary except for some of the shit she pulled lately, trying to move right.

Honestly, I could say the same thing about you for failing to recognize that George W and Laura Bush are two of the most beloved figures in politics. I personally find them disgusting and repulsive, but that doesn't change the fact that millions of mindless freeper idiots worship them.

And, I can't help but consider you to be naieve if you think that Bush is a good candidate. Anyone with half a brain can see through his fake moderate BS. The only reason he even looks halfway convincing to the party faithful is because (1) he can lie all he wants without recourse, and (2) he presided over the worst terror attack in American history.

Its his only claim to legitimacy.

The only thing that makes him a good candidate is the fact that some people are too damn scared to think.

Hillary Clinton running for President is a right wing dream come true. The left can't possibly rally enough people behind her as the right will be able to against her. The media has been attacking her since 1992, and too many people who may be moderate Dems have fallen for it.

Bill Clinton's approval ratings are far higher that shrub's. There's a new poll out showing that Bill would beat W. head to head.

After eight years of shrub Americans will want a change.

And, who knows what this country will look like in even a year and a half (for midterms), let alone by 2008.

Republicans are just a terror attack and a few more e-vote states away from securing GOP dominance forever.

the right wing? Well, yeah, that would be true, but most Americans--I hardly think that most Americans are rightwing.

I hate these broadbrush attempts at discrediting. Clinton is one of the most popular Presidents we've had and many, MANY wish he was back in office instead of dimson.

As far as Hillary running, nah, why should she take this kind of bullshit from the rightwing anymore. Anything to throw the message off course:eyes:

Geeze...when will people see propaganda for what it is--bullshit.

8. I Think You Are Dreaming Or Smoking Dope
I will never vote for her in the primaries or the general election simply because she voted for the Iraq war.

I also think that you underestimate her negative baggage. If she is the nominee, the Republicans could trot out any candidate and their base will vote for that candidate over Hillary. The right-wing hates Hillary almost more than they despise her husband.

For the Democrats to win we will need a candidate with far less baggage.

Do you honestly believe that all those fundamental sheeple that made spectacles of themselves over Schiavo will suddenly be gone in three years. If the Dem base could not get Kerry elected this last go around what will be signifucantly different in 08? Dream on.

Further, the culture war is not going to end because Hillary is nominated. In fact it will only get escalated as every two-bit Republican huckster lines up to do battle against their great Satan one Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hope may spring eternal, but foolishness can kill every time.

If Hillary draws them out into the streets - the more the merrier.

The truth is the only reason W. won this last time around was cuz of the war on terror - and he barely won at that.

By the time '08 rolls around the economy, health care, and other domestic concerns will be back on the front burner. Our country is going bankrupt - people are catching on...

...like Kerry was with the Swift Boat vets and letting them go unanswered for a month. Or, how as soon as he had the nomination locked up, the whole RW slime machine got into gear labeling him an unprincipled flip-flopper, something Kerry never answered until the debates.

The best thing about Hilary is that she's been through the meat grinder for the last 14 years and I don't think there is much more than can come out about her that will change people's opinions of her. While I would prefer a whole litany of candidates to her - Dean, Clark, Warner, Kerry, Sharpton, Spitzer, Gore, etc - I don't know how any of them would react to actually being the nominee. Gore, Kerry, Dukakis & Mondale didn't hold up well once the spotlight was on them.

She's got no 'lock' on a nomination that's years away.

I doubt there'll be any 'bruising primary' on the Republican side; they're far too organized to let that happen.

Senator Clinton doesn't have Bill's charisma; she just has the name. Yes, it's a two-for-one deal, but there's a down side to that, too.

I'd sooner see Sen. Boxer run than Sen. Clinton, but I'm still a Clark supporter, too.

Women DON'T LIKE HER. I know this from talking to non-political women, even ones that usually vote Democratic. It's no longer surprising to me to encounter Hillary loathing females, although I don't understand it exactly. However, although I can't explain it I'm less concerned with the origin of the hatred than in the result: a candidate from the Democratic side that women dislike and distrust like Hillary is a non-starter for President.

She could be the end of the Democratic Party if she got the nomination. In fact if I thought there was no chance she would be denied the nomination, I'd be preparing to leave the country before the general election even started. If Frist is the next President you don't want to be here. Hillary is one of the few possible candidates who could make a November win for someone as stone cold psycho & unlikeable as Frist an a priori certainty. Even without the ministrations of Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia and Voterfraud Incorporated.

47. The more Hillary bashing I encounter here
the more I want to like her. Funny, huh? She might be the shrewdest Dem we have in office. I'm going to withhold judgement on her until she actually announces. And I don't care about her running to the center(or to the right as some have claimed). Bush in 2000 ran to the center, at times, during his campaign. Look how he's governed.

Bill Clinton tried to run as a moderate and govern as a progressive but he didn't have the full Democratic machine behind him. In 2008 I think you will see an even more united and expanded Dem base than we saw in 2004.

With Bush's approval ratings where they currently are, I think we are finally witnessing the awakening of the American majority. After the twin shocks of Indecision 2000 and September the 11th, when we were at our most vulnerable, when we were easily and cynically manipulated into an illegal and immoral war, the neo-con cat is out of the bag. And most Americans are beginning to understand this.

Now what might be the reaction in this case? In 1976, Americans chose to elect a(supposed)simple and(actually)honest man with a big smile and an open heart as a reaction to Nixon's obvious insularity and paranoia.

I could see the same thing happen again. Remember, there's always blowback. Something Republicans never seem to understand.

Right now he's stroking the base, but he'll move toward the center in a year or two. Remember how they painted W is a moderate back in 1999? That's what they'll do again. Frist could play this role, and he'll be a formidable candidate.

We have to pick someone who can beat him or someone like him. Much as I'd love to see Hillary & Bill back in the White House (gosh that would be great), the only type of rep Hillary can beat is one who's hated even more than she is, and I think the rep's smoky back room will pick someone who comes across as a moderate.

he's a self-admitted "schizoid" who went "a little crazy".

Another poster commented that he has no profile (in pics from the side, his face seems rather flat.)

50. you could be right
the Republicans are not as united as many believe - the primaries could be Frist vs Hagel, whose visions of the Republican party are quite different. And what's McCain going to do?

Hilary has a lot of negatives, but will the election really fall along idealogical lines? I can see a lot of women crossing party lines to vote for Hilary. Perhaps the opposite would be true as well, with men voting against her. Recent polls have shown this to be false, however, with the majority of Americans saying they'd be willing to vote for a woman as President.

The storyline - after eight years of suckass economy, another Clinton rides to the rescue, just like the last time a Bush fucked things up.

And Clinton's "turn to the right" is turning in a direction a lot more Americans are turned to than is reflected here at DU. Which probably also accounts for the numerous single sentence answers on this thread. Hilary will be the favorite in the primaries, and she will be a strong candidate for the presidency.

Whether I like it or not.

54. Don't count those chickens.....
before they're hatched. Here in NY state Hillary seems to be doing okay with the Democratic majority. She's really not done that much for us here in WNY and I continue to resent her hawkish positions and her recent pandering to conservative voters (reconsidering Pro-choice positions) have alienated me from her. She's still better than most repugs, but I would support others Dems or progressives over her if a primary were held tomorrow. I agree with those who maintain that she is a highly polarizing figure. She just rubs so many people the wrong way. Don't think she could change the perceptions of those who despise her. Moving to more "right" positions are just a waste of time, and seem disingenuous.

an exhumed Strom Thurmond.

Otherwise NO, she's a walking Refucklican Electoral College Landslide.

And in 2009, The Democratic Party is cancelled due to lack of interest.

56. I actually am starting to resent the idea that we even believe that
the first woman President will get there because of who she married and the importance of her last name.

It just won't happen. The odds are against it.

The first woman president will get their due to her own merits and accomplishments. Marriage is not an accomplishment that will put anyone in the White House. Please understand this.

That's why Hillary would lose the general election.

but sure, it's possible. I would like to see her run myself or get on a VP ticket so that at least we won't have to keep speculating.

May the best 4-Star General^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hperson win in 2008. :P

Seriously, I think Democrats in general can get behind Senator Clinton. I just don't know about everybody else. Also, if Clark also runs, then the battle will be during the Arkansas primaries. Hopefully it won't drag out too long.

Added: I also want to point out that if Senator Clinton runs, her #1 campaigner is going to be Bill Clinton. I think most of us can agree that he is one of the most astute politicians alive. If anybody can change perceptions and win votes, it is him.

58. I hope your wrong!
IMO She comes off as pandering and insincere. She doesn't have the personality or the ability to relate to people like her husband does.I question her motive for wanting to become president. I feel she wants the job more out of self-interest and power then she truly wants to help us or this country. Besides, I think she has already been president indirectly once already.I won't even get into the baggage she will bring along with her. I liked Clinton, but he wasn't perfect. I think we need new representation. I still like John Kerry and I will support him if he decides to run again. I will find it difficult to get on the band wagon and support Hilary.

66. You People
You all keep blathering on and on as to who the best candidate may be for the Democratic Party in 2008. IT DOES NOT MATTER! Unless and until the entire election process guarantees that EVERY VOTE COUNTS, the repugs will win every election fraudulently till hell freezes over. So, I suggest we all direct our energies to insuring that our votes count. Otherwise, I expect the following:

2008 - President Jeb Bush/James Dobson VP
2016 - President Jenna Bush/Ralph Reed VP
2024 - President Barbara Bush/Who knows what whacko

Now, if this scenario doesn't scare the bejeezus out of all of you, and nothing is done about voter fraud, please stop wasting your energy arguing who the best Dem candidate will be in 2008. He or she can be a reincarnated FDR, JFK or Jesus Christ, it still won't matter unless the process is fixed. The 2006 election is only 18 month away and I don't see any progress being made by the Feds or States to fix the problem. It's also obvious that as long as the lying crooked bastards are in power, nothing will change. So, instead of arguing about who the next Dem loser will be, how about we discuss ways to legitimately (or if necessary, illigitamely) win the next election.

Let's reform the voting, and then America will be happy to elect whatever bland schmuck we nominate. :eyes:

Seriously, if some of us want to discuss who we nominate, why can't you just let us? There are plenty of threads here devoted to election reform.

69. I will never vote for anyone who supported Bush in his aggression
to invade Iraq. Period.

I did it with Kerry, so desperate was I to get Bush out. He was shackled by his own vote during the campaign. It is still early, but I will refuse to buy any spin when it comes to a spin on the vote to allow Bush, an AWOL CIC, to murder hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

I will not put aside my principles again. I want a peace candidate and not a war candidate.

71. no she won't . . .
because the Republicans a) control the voting process, and b) count the votes . . . she won't win, and neither will any other Democrat . . . happened in 2000, happened in 2002, happened in 2004 . . . and will happen again in 2006 and 2008 . . .

and if you think that the Republican controlled Congress is going to reform the process, think again . . . why would they tamper with a process that insures that they win every election? . . . no chance . . . no chance in hell . . .

87. My predictions:
No matter whom we put-up in 2008 will win. (assuming fair election machinery, which is a HUGE assumption)

Why? Because things will be so bad by then that our party, the Democratic Party, will once again be called-in to clean-up after the GOP's messes. 1932? We We're like that guy with the shovel following the elephants in a parade.

Oil supply will get tight in relation to demand, which will cause worldwide recession by then. Add colossal national debt with an inflationary trend, and we have a financial clusterf*ck on our way. Those in power (the GOP) will get blamed for this next huge mess.

Meanwhile, the GOP base will get more and more disillusioned. Go look at FreekRepublic. At this point, a scary portion of the messages there are about how the GOP "gets nothing done, despite controlling all of Washington." When a temper-tantruming 1 or 2% of their base decides to sit this next election out, they'll effectively be handing the election over to our nominee. A clever way to stoke conservatives' frustration without doing damage to our image with moderates and the base would be worth its weight in gold. If we can find some way to recruit a right-wing spoiler, even better.

Now, to Hillary specifically..

According to most current polls, if Hillary wants the nomination it's hers. Barring some brand new scandal, I don't see this changing anytime soon. The aura of inevitability is already bestowed-upon her by the mainstream media, just as they adorned it upon Bush & Gore in 1999, and Dole in 1995. She, they have determined, is what will sell ratings, magazines, and books.

Judging from her popularity here, we at DU might need to get used to hearing her referred to as the Democratic nominee. I'm a Clark man myself, but, being as stone-faced sober neutral as possible, I simply don't see how to stop the Hillary train from leaving the station. If nothing changes the landscape by 2007 (in politics.. a big "if"), even I will begin to plot strategy for a Hillary campaign.

God I hate Sam Brownback.

Senator Clinton could surprise me, yes, but I'm still thinking that the Democratic field will be formidable. Edwards, Bayh, Clark, Feingold... and others. She is a capable soul but she will have to fight hard for the nomination.
