Rep Gerald Allen wants all books banned that contain a hint, a whisper
or an author that is gay. What is sicko! Maybe we should write him?

MONTGOMERY - An Alabama lawmaker who sought to ban gay marriages now wants to ban novels with gay characters from public libraries, including university libraries.

A bill by Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, would prohibit the use of public funds for "the purchase of textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." Allen said he filed the bill to protect children from the "homosexual agenda."

"Our culture, how we know it today, is under attack from every angle," Allen said in a press conference Tuesday.

Allen said that if his bill passes, novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural would have to be removed from library shelves and destroyed.

1. This is so twisted.
I pray people like this and their ideas are soundly rejected.

5. Well if he wants to ban the Bible that is his problem
he'll have to deal with his bible bumping voters.

Everyone at DU know that King James was a flaming homosexual right?

15. I think someone already called and left a message about just that
He was told straight out that the Bible would have to go.

20. Lot's daughters got him drunk and then had sex with him
after his wife turned to a pillar of stone. It's not a pleasant part of the Bible, but it's there. Kind of hard to read that chapter of the Bible and I especially won't let my kids read it!

So, I guess the Bible is out in Alabama?

This is why I can't live in Alabama. I grew up there and left when I was 19. I love the state - it's beautiful - but the politics kill me.

28. I heard it that Lot GAVE his two virgin daughters to the men and
some fundamentalists actually use this as a way of saying it is better to rape a women than a man....really no shit. I heard it over on About.com's Opinion Forum. They have some REAL sick people over there. One WOMEN even agreed that it would be better that she be raped than a man!

Wonder what the good old Alabama Senator things of this one.

Man, I feel sorry for Forrest Gump. He was such a nice guy.

26. Not only that, but check out 1 Samuel, chapter 18
1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

3. Didn't the fundies already try this in Alabama a few years ago?
What about books written by gays? The libraries will be decimated if they go through with this madness.

9. How can you POSSIBLY be so afraid of gay people
That you have to ban all mention of them? It makes me sick to see how they've turned gays, liberals, immigrants, whoever, into scapegoats as the answer to everything that's wrong with the world. I am a very tolerant person.....except of intolerant ignoramuses.

12. In Victorian England
genteel people did not allow books written by female authors to placed near books written by male authors for fear of what said books might do when left without a chaperon.

In Victorian England, and only after the death of Prince Albert (and his Prince Albert)
tables and chairs had their legs covered by swathes of flowing fabric so that people would not be overcome by the sight of those long hard strong ...*faints*

24. What an idiot.
Book-banning is the tool of the intellectually useless.

Bruce Cockburn gets it right once again:
----
Maybe The Poet, from Stealing Fire (AWESOME album)
-

Maybe the poet is gay
But he'll be heard anyway

Maybe the poet is drugged
But he won't stay under the rug

Maybe the voice of the spirit
In which case you'd better hear it

Maybe he's a woman
Who can touch you where you're human

Male female slave or free
Peaceful or disorderly
Maybe you and he will not agree
But you need him to show you new ways to see

Don't let the system fool you
All it wants to do is rule you
Pay attention to the poet
You need him and you know it

Put him up against the wall
Shoot him up with pentothal

Shoot him up with lead
You won't call back what's been said
Put him in the ground
But one day you'll look around

There'll be a face you don't know
Voicing thoughts you've heard before

Male female slave or free
Peaceful or disorderly
Maybe you and he will not agree
But you need him to show you new ways to see

Don't let the system fool you
All it wants to do is rule you
Pay attention to the poet
You need him and you know it
