Former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth to endorse Clark for president

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark is touting the endorsement of a Florida Democratic icon in his push to convince primary voters that he among the party's presidential candidates is best equipped to beat President Bush in November.

Former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth will make his formal announcement in New Hampshire on Sunday during what strategists are calling a series of ''electability rallies'' just three days before that state's critical primary, alongside other out-of-state luminaries such as former New York Mayor David Dinkins, U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York and actor Ted Danson.

Clark aides say the Butterworth brand is important as a sign that Florida could still be in play in a competitive nomination battle by its March 9 primary, but more significantly because of the powerful symbolism of Florida in presidential politics and the need to show New Hampshire voters that Clark will be able to compete there in November.

''This thing could come down to March 9 and could be decided in Florida,'' said Mo Elleithee, a Clark spokesman.

People, is this a good thing? Bad? Neutral? I don't really think endorsements mean much, but I want to get a sense of who this guy is.

11. I've heard them both referred to by that term...
Not being a native, I can't say for certain, but they're both very popular.

10. "Up Close and Personal"
There's something about Clark that doesn't come across in the debates. When people meet him, they seem to be bowled over by him. It's remarkable.

This is a great endorsement. Endorsements really aren't that important, unless someone doesn't have ANY. Then I guess voters would wonder why. Also, particular endorsements mean something to some voters....like the endorsement of Clark by three very well known environmentalists.

Glad to hear Clark isn't leaving NH to go down to FL for the endorsement!
