Poll question: Should Steny Hoyer Resign As Minority Whip?
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 12:06 PM by Dave Sund
Since Steny Hoyer apparently doesn't care about the needs of the Democratic Party and wants to sell out to corporate interests... Since his allies publicly called out House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for scolding them about the Bankruptcy Bill... Since he's not doing his job.

(Read about it on Atrios)

Should Steny Hoyer step down as Minority Whip?

1. Democratic Leadership should promote Democratic Principles
If they can't do that then they should step down.

2. Something like that shouldn't be decided on one issue
even if it is an important issue.

3. His Bankruptcy vote was bad...
But Hoyer has consistently maintainedan 80 - 100 voter rating from Americans for Democratic Action. We can't be eating our own now, we need to concentrate on the real enemy - Bush, Delay and Company

5. Hoyer

As my congressman, I am torn about old Steny. He's on the right side on SS and choice but there isn't a lot left going for him except that his district would be in danger of going to a Republican if he were weakened. He lost me on his support to invade Iraq. I voted for the socialist candidate last time to send him a message. Most of the time he panders to the military industrial and bureaucrats that make up most of his district (after all, they are his largest constituency). After the bankruptcy vote, I wrote and asked him "what were you thinking"?

On edit: If I thought there were the slghtest chance that one of the local nazis would defeat him, I would go with him. I would just like him to move a little closer to having an interest in social justice.

6. I'm not talking about resigning from the party
But a House Whip shouldn't be publicly encouraging the other side to bring an issue to a vote. He shouldn't be encouraging people in the caucus to vote against the caucus. The job of the Whip is to make sure people vote with the party. Hoyer doesn't vote with the party. He's gotta step down.

I am not suggesting that we purge him from the party. I'm not suggesting that we run a primary challenge against him. I just don't want him representing the party any longer. He makes us look weak. He's weak. And we need real leadership.

8. The Whip's job is exactly that!
Keeping the Party in line. I don't think the whole party will ever be of one mind (left leaning, middle of the road, right leaning) but If we are to have leadership then the Leadership should tow the Party line. Hoyer should be making sure Democrats vote the way of the Party or he should step down (not resign his House seat, but certainly his leadership role)

7. I'm Very Upset With Him
He's my congressman and I called his office to oppose the bill. I really didn't think he would vote in favor. The backrputcy bill will harm the lives of his own constituents -- Prince Georges is primarily a blue collar county.
