3. the "offer"
was no offer at all - still takes away the filibuster, just allows for up to 100 hours of debate before a floor vote.

Doesn't sound like Reid will take it - he'd better not. It's just smoke and mirrors.

26. 100 Hours to debate only plus they are changing it so a nominee
can't die in the Committee.

They want to change that because even if Bolton loses in the Foreign Policy Committee they still want it to go to a floor vote (entire Senate).

They are also doing away with holds on nominees. (GOP Plans Vote to Overcome Dems' EPA Block http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/04/27/AR2005042701740.html)

They plan on ramming everything through on a simple majority vote and doing away with all the standard policies and procedures the Senate usually follows.

The Ends Justify the Means - the Republican Motto.

4. It doesn't sound good. Reid just said it doesn't matter how many
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 01:13 PM by Pirate Smile
times you say something, it doesn't make it true.

He is talking about Frist's saying this is unprecedented and has never happened before.

Stupid MSNBC cut away and didn't show Reid speaking. CNN is showing it.

edit to add - OK, now MSNBC put Harry on.

7. Reid doesn't look happy
It looks like he's standing his ground - good.

What happened to 200 years of Senate rules? Does Bill Frist now make it all up as he goes along? The arrogance is astounding.

11. LOL - Harry "I don't know Bolton but I would recognize him now
because he has that unusual mustache which I kinda like".

Reid - the proposal is a "Big Wet Kiss to the Right".

Reid - This is a slow motion nuclear option.

16. He's so soft spoken. I was afraid when I found out he was to be
minority leader... I thought, couldn't they have chosen someone with a little more fire? But, I was wrong, and he is great!

31. He is!
The thing I love about Mr. Reid is he's so smooth, cool, calm and collected. He puts his fire and passion when he speaks. I think it works in his favor that he's not totally outragiously mad or anything like that because it makes him look rational and the republicans look like loons.

Reid: some day in the future I became the majority leader, I wouldn't want this rule...we're not always going to be in the minority here.

Heh!

and then asked to be recognized after the roll is called. I think he is talking to cat boy right now on the floor.

24. I don't think right now
but I think its coming.

As I understand it, the "nuclear option" will procedurally appear when they call for cloture on the attempt to filibuster, and they point of order is raised that it only requires 51 (50 + cheney) to invoke cloture on a judicial nominee... but I could be wrong on the way that will play out.

That being said, I thought I heard this am that one of the judges that they object to was voted out of committee.

If people are interested, I can try to keep diarying for another 15 min or so, assuming they come back from the quorum call... they are back

talking about wholesome entertainment choices and legislation for cable and satellite to purchase child friendly tier of programming. So that's it

22. hmmmm
They must be about ready to pull the trigger on the nuclear option - Bush can whine tonight about their 'reasonable' compromise, and then they'll attack the Constitution with gusto.

It won't work from a PR standpoint, but the Republicans have painted themselves into a corner now with their nutcase base.

I'm not sure exactly how it will play out, but it will be a point of order on the rules to invoke cloture on the filibuster, I think

32. If they do that
Then Reid can say he compromised first and they said "no deal" and wouldn't corporate unless it was on their terms which isn't what you do in a democracy.

but what ruling(s) has Janice Rogers Brown made that are disturbing? I know that Priscilla Owens is anti-choice but I do not know what rulings she made that illustrate that point.
