Kucinich calls on media and public to hold President accountable
Kucinich calls on media and public to hold President accountable on Iraq, Social Security

On April 28, Congressman Dennis Kucinich issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s press conference held that evening:

"Tonight, the President will make a rare prime time appearance before the press and the nation. With our troops caught in a quagmire in Iraq, with no exit in sight; our economy weakening; gas prices on the rise; and the President continuing to create a false crisis in Social Security it is time to hold this President, and his Administration, accountable for their failing policies.

"Whether standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, in an auditorium in Cincinnati, before the United States Congress, or the press at the White House, the President has repeatedly used the media and prime time appearances to mislead the nation.

"Now more than ever, it is urgent that the media and the public hold this Administration accountable:

"For two years, the Untied States has been bogged down in a quagmire in Iraq. Over 1500 US soldiers have died and tens of thousands have been injured. Despite the presence of well over 100,000 US troops, Iraq has become a training ground for terrorists and chaos rules the day. Despite elections, the Iraqi people know that decisions about their future are made in Washington and not in Baghdad. Yet, this Administration has offered the American public no plan for securing Iraq, no end game, and no exit strategy. The American public deserves better, and the press and the public must hold the President accountable.

"For months, the President has traveled the country repeatedly using misinformation in an effort to sell his Social Security privatization scheme. The President has repeatedly asserted that there is 'no Social Security Trust'. Such misleading statements by the President do the debate on Social Security a real disservice. As the President is well aware, the Social Security Trust Fund is not just a filing cabinet, as he claims, but represents $1.7 trillion dollars in solemn obligations of the United States. The President is also well aware, that the Trust Fund is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States treasury. The American public deserves an honest debate about the future of Social Security, and the President must be held accountable.

"The American public deserves the truth from their government. With a large and captive television audience, it is time for the President to answer the tough questions, and explain his false and misleading statements. The media and the public must not allow this President to continue to use the power of the bully pulpit to mislead the public on the most pressing issues facing our nation today."

Bush* has a Credibility Problem. Repeat it over and over again. Never get off the sound bite. Just like Bush*, it doesn't matter what question is asked always answer with your prepared sound bite. Bush* has a Credibility Problem...

21. Gotta love Kucinich
"...The President has repeatedly asserted that there is 'no Social Security Trust'... What's the Preznit trying to do, tank our credit worthiness? They sure seem like they're trying to bankrupt us.

Don't ever forget that *'s imaginary filing cabinet was hard earned currency taken from working America. Check the record. In 1983 Greenspan lead the way to a TAX INCREASE on working Americans. We were told this "extra" taxation were necessary in order to build a surplus for when the boomers retired.

GOP Crooks gave that money - the money Al Gore wanted to put into a lock box - to their base: the Haves and the Have Mores.

22. It's so important to show that there is an ALTERNATIVE to the corruption
of what is now the GOP. When people inevitably turn away from them - and I believe it is inevitable and is starting to happen at last - there MUST be something positive for them to turn to instead. Otherwise there is only despair and that much more reason to hold to the GOP if it is the ONLY choice as they like to portray themselves

Kucinich (and the other wonderful progressive leaders like Boxer and Conyers and others) offers an alternative. Not just pointing out the lies and corruption but showing that there is a place, and people of integrity in public service, to turn to.

We need to remember this. It's not just that we progressives need to find the right leaders and direction for ourselves, we also MUST reach out to disaffected independents and, yes, Republicans who are at last beginning to see through the lies. We don't want them to despair, we want them to turn to a new hope. There will be plenty of opportunity to get back to the usual political arguments AFTER this crisis has been resolved and the country belongs to the people again. For now, we must reach out to all people of good heart, Dem or Repub or Independent, because we are in crisis times and can't do it alone.

We don't want them to despair, we want disaffected GOP to see that there is an alternative to the corruption and lies, and that is a POSTIVE choice to turn to it.
