Wesley Clark's wife is great too...
I was quite impressed with Wesley Clark's wife. She spoke intelligently, seems polished, and is quite supportive of her husband's goal. I think she would make a great First Lady. After seeing Barbara Walters special it sounded like Howard Dean's wife really didn't want to be the First Lady. She's very devoted to her patients which I think is great but do you think she has the right attitude for being a First Lady? (Please Dean supporters, don't shoot me down - I would gladly support Dean if he was the democratic nominee).

1. honestly,
I don't care whether she entertains and decorates or not.

Howard Dean will change the world for the better.

2. Mrs. Dean Is Terrific. Imagine Taking Time Out Of Her Busy Life
to go all the way to Iowa and do media appearances.

It's not like she's an unemployed heiress like Heinz.

3. Being a doctor is an immeasurably important job which
takes years of training. Judy Dean is a small town physician, whose patients undoubtedly depend on her. She certainly is a very dedicated doctor and has let it be known ahead of time that she will not give up her patients. Why should she?

4. What is a First Lady anyway? There's nothing in the constitution about one
I personally don't like royalty. I think its antithetical to the American idea. I'm looking forward to the day when the nation is mature enough to set royalty worship aside forever.

5. Oh for Pete's sake!
First, Dr. Steinberg was on with Diane Sawyer, not Barbara Walters. Secondly, any attitude is the correct one to be "first lady." and Finally, as a Clark supporter, I don't appreciate you posting shit that makes the rest of us look bad. Thanks

8. Clarification
Please understand I was not referring to appearances - I was wondering if it sounded like Mrs. Dean really wanted to be First Lady and wanted to change her life to accommodate being First Lady. There will be new demands on her. I'm sure she's a great person. I'm sorry I ever started this thread.

9. I've had the experience of starting threads I wished I hadn't.
My sympathies! :hi:

It sounds as though she doesn't really want to be the royal sort of first lady Americans are used to. I read somewhere that she would like to work at a clinic in DC if her husband is elected. She loves being a doctor. She doesn't want to give that up, and he doesn't want her to. I would be so thrilled if someone like Judy Dean became first lady!

10. Then I'll address your original intent, respectfully
but before I do, remember this: This is a public board, and short of slamming another member, you are free to post genuine questions. Do not look to the masses for affirmation. Look to the masses for answers.

Now, do I think Mrs. Dr. Dean wants to be the First Lady? Yeah, I do. She married a doctor who became a governor. She's already been a First Lady for years, and she hasn't left his side yet. I applaud her for understanding family values (who is gonna be there for Junior while dad is blazing 'cross the country?) and I don't think for one second that her lack of enthusiasm on Diane Sawyer translates to her lack of desire to step into a new roll, if her husband becomes the president. I think the subdued nature of their interview was motivated by a desire to appear calm (a badly needed spin after the country jumped on the Dean Scream.)

Those are just my thoughts. Given that I don't have the great pleasure of meeting her in person, I can only offer you one girl's opinion.

Be encouraged. Questioning is never wrong. When we stop questioning, then we're wrong.

12. I agree with you
I think it is bad form, though, to create implicit comparisons between spouses like the original post did. I think both women are great and I can see myself admiring either of them. I firmly believe either Dr. Steinberg or Gert Clark have the "correct attitude" (i.e., each loves and respects her husband) to be a great "first lady" and to be great role models for both boys and girls.

13. Agree Completely
Leave Mrs. Dean out of this.

She seems like a lovely sweet woman, & she is doing really important work as a doctor.

Clark Supporter also.

6. How bout a Clark supporter givin' ya "what for" LOL
Listen, I LUUUUUUUUV Gert! I've met her in person and she just charmed the socks off of me. I looked at her and sighed, "Now THERE is a gal I would be proud to call my First Lady."

But let's look at Dr. Dean (that's Mrs. Dr. Dean) and what she could bring to the White House.

In this country, girls are scoring lower than boys in math and science. The predominant percentage of scientist, doctors and mathematicians are boys. Our girls are being groomed by society to settle for the feminine roll, and raise a family. Now, I'm studying to be a teacher and I'm married and raising a family. I got NO problem with that. But it was my choice, just like my daughter has chosen to become a forensic scientist (thanks CSI-Miami... beats the hell out of her previous aspirations to be a circus clown).

As far as roll models go, America's girls would do well to have Mrs. Dr. Dean showing them they don't have to settle. She is a wife, a mother, and a doctor who cares for her patients, cares for her family, and rightly takes pride in her career goals and achievements.

She may have to reside in the White House, but she doesn't have to follow her husband on the campaign trail to prove to us that she'll make a fantastic roll model for our daughters.

A good Irish Catholic Brooklyn girl. Showing that, among his immeasurable other stellar qualities, Wes has excellent taste. Except in clothes, of course.:)

11. Well in Mrs. Deans defense...
It's nobody damn business. She does not hold a political office like her husband. First Ladies bring to it what they want or don't want. I mean we let medusa get away with helping run our Government for 8 years using astrology!

14. I like Gert Clark, too.
Actually, I like all of the top four potential first ladies. What a breath of fresh air any of them would be after four years of a first lady who seems so lonely and sad.
