Poll question: Sen. George Allen. Tough to beat in '08?
For some reason I really fear Sen. George Allen (VA). If he were to receive the Republican nomination in 2008 he could play that Southern, Conservative, Straight-Shootin', Cowboy, possibly better then Bush. On top of that he is a very strong campaigner w/ executive and legislative experience. Any thoughts on Allen and 2008?

1. Allen's an empty suit
A one term Senator from Virginia who only got elected because his dad was the Redskins' coach. He's one of the weaker candidates the Republicans can run in 2008.

7. Polls show Warner w/ the margin of error, but I still have my doubts.
Both are extremley popular, but Virginia obviously leans-Republican. I think Allen would probably narrowly defeat Warner. This comming from a HUGEEEEE Warner fan.

9. I meant "should" as in "it would be a good idea" not "will likely happen"
I think it would be close, but it would be a huge win if we could get it - and it would end Allen's career in its tracks.

3. Young man
I knew John Warner and you are no John Warner . . .

Mark Warner could beat him easily, even among moderate Republicans.

21. Allen was pretty pathetic on Russert yesterday. But, hey, coherence and
critical thinking skills obviously don't matter to the Rethugs--look at Dubya!

11. Wasn't he on Meet the Press this morning? (or on Wolfoblitzer?)
That dude was for sure an alien neocon. His non-commital mouth uttered dogma straight from the Pubcon bible - no thoughts of his own, just busshitt. He had those "dead eyes" like Bob Novak, Jesse Helms, and Orrin Hatch. Virginia, with its vicious & hateful attacks on gays, can keep this man and his ilk.

12. George Allen
George Allen=Dan Quayle, that's all you need to know about him.

As far a his Presidential ambitions go, I think he'd do fairly well in a Republican primary. But you put this guy up against someone like Clark, Gore, Feingold, or Edwards I think he gets destroyed. I think his only chance at the WH is as a VP. If a moderate like Hagel, or McCain gets the nomination they may pick Allen as VP to appeal to the conservative base.

13. The GOP gets it better than we do...they won't run a Senator.
We run Senators, we lose.

They run Senators, they lose. At least they have learned their lesson.

14. Cheney leaves in 2007, Allen is chosen as VP. He runs.
This is one among many scenarios.

15. Only 2 Senators since 1900
Have run for Pres. not against an incumbent seeking re-election: JFK and Warren Harding. Goldwater, McGovern, Dole and Kerry were all running against incumbents

20. The difference being he did serve as Governor,
he's not just a senate rat. I don't know what to think about his chances...he's kind of bland, but that could all change.

The only one I can imagine dumber than this asshat is little Normie Coleman (R-Ass Licker). Allen stands upright only because of the inflatable coat hanger that keeps his suits three dimensional.

He also has a pretty bad past (caught dead to rights in some recist shit when he was in high school in California). He may have won in Virginia, but that has as much to do with his daddy as with anything *he* was able to do.

Put this guy on the national stage and he's easy pickins.

17. Allen and Bill Frist are the only two Republicans that Hillary can beat..
IMO. McCain and Guiliani would win nationally fairly easily, but I think they lack the conservative credentials to get the nomination. George Allen is viewed by many GOP insiders (according to the National Journal) as the darkhorse GOP nominee in 2008. Which would be great news to Dems.

19. National Journal has a poll that agrees with you
Is it too early to talk about '08?

A new poll of Republican Party insiders gives the early edge in the race for its 2008 presidential nomination to one of its least well-known potential candidates: Sen. George Allen (Va.).

National Journal asked 85 GOP members of Congress, party officials and strategists to predict who would win the party's nod in three years. Allen, a former Virginia governor who is little known outside the mid-Atlantic region, took the top spot, edging Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.) came in third, followed by, in descending order, former New York City mayor Rudoph W. Giuliani, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.) and New York Gov. George E. Pataki.
