PAC behind purchase of DeLay billboards

By TJ Aulds
The Daily News

LA MARQUE — A political action group founded by former Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean has purchased a pair of billboards, one of which is in La Marque, aimed at House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. “Lobbyists sent Tom DeLay golfing; all you got was this billboard,” the roadside banner reads. It also contains a generic photograph of golfers’ feet on a putting green.

Democracy for America, a national organization founded by Dean, now the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, purchased the billboard as well as one in downtown Houston. The billboards went up Monday morning with the La Marque advertisement on Interstate 45 South. facing northbound traffic near Vauthier Road.

“All the alleged ethics violations that have surrounded Tom DeLay are a disgrace to our political system,” said Noreen Nielsen, Democracy for America’s communication’s director. “And this is our way to say (to DeLay) we know what you are doing and we don’t approve of it."

Galveston County Republican party chairman Chris Stevens scoffed at that claim that any of the groups associated with the billboards or anti-DeLay rallies are independent or grass roots.

“This is Howard Dean plain and simple,” said Stevens. “Obviously this is his way of attacking the people of Texas and continuing his attacks against President (George) Bush and Tom DeLay.

“We won. Get over it.”

This is not the final look of the billboards, just a idea.

No, Mr. Stevens, this is not Howard Dean, this is us, the people.

Subject: It wasn't Howard!

Mr. Stevens,

You are mistaken in your explanation of the billboards which have appeared in your territory. It isn't the work of Howard Dean, it is the response of us, the citizenry, to Mr. Delay's hypocrisy! He brings shame upon the United States House of Representatives and your party. We take exception to his sleaze and self enrichment. You should as well.

Respectfully,
Acmejack (secret identity used here)

5. Good idea.
This is a mental warfare tactic against DeLay and the Republicans. I like it.

It seems like they could come up with something more damaging that golfing though. Didn't they take him on expensive overseas trips too? I mean golf...so what? A trip to a foreign country is a bigger deal. Like, "Lobbyists took Tom DeLay to Thailand and all you got was this billboard."

6. Golf- yeah that'll really enrage Red State swing voters.
DeLay went on Golf trips with contributors- what an atypical politican.

Folks, do we have any thing on DeLay that brings about corrupt imagery that swing voters can relate too? Trips? Golfing?

Most folks, like it or not, accept the fact the politicans are wined & dined, go on golf trips with contributors, etc.

Democracy for America stood with me long before telling the truth about Tom DeLay became fashionable. You made a difference in Texas—with your support last year, my challenge brought Tom DeLay closer to losing his seat than ever before in his political career.

You can see every day on the news that your courage sparked something big. You helped make Tom DeLay the national symbol of Republican excess. He and the machine he built are on the defensive. And they should be—DeLay and his party must be held accountable for the corruption and abuse of power in Congress.

So keep fighting the good fight. Here in Texas and across the country we're onto DeLay and his special interest allies—and we want our country back. If you're in the area, you can also join one of two DFA visibility rallies at the DeLay billboards in Galveston and Houston. Count on me to keep fighting, too.

Stevens reduced to sputtering inanities, equating Tom DeLay with the people of Texas! Methinks the dart struck pretty close to the heart to get him that riled up.

I wonder what the working people in DeLay's district think about him getting wined and dined overseas while they're working two jobs and 60 hours a week just to keep body and soul together?

13. Easier to spout sound bite nonsense
Than to engage in actual, substantive refutation of the charges against DeLay. Especially when neither the facts nor the rules are on DeLay's side.

I'm still trying to figure out why Stevens is trying to make Texans out to be victims of billboards...most Texans would find THAT to be offensive.

17. Kick ass!
I'm glad of that. And you're right. Dean is the chairman but people send him ideas and he can decide which one's to run with if any. Oh and notice how Mr. Stevens is so angry? LOL. They're losing grip on people's support. It's my dream to someday see Texas go blue. The last time I know of them to do that was with President Kennedy.

Yep. This was on the local Houston news yesterday. I remember thinking: whoa, a billboard like that in Houston.. and .. shown on the news!

I didn't know Howard Dean was behind it, though. Why am I not surprised? :-)

Go Dean! Go Democrats!

21. Well, actually, it wasn't Howard Dean....it was DFA.
He can not do stuff with DFA involving such activities now. He will speak at the Democracy Fest in TX this summer, but he can not fundraise or do activities. Not would he.

These were paid for by us, the members of DFA, which was formed from his campaign.

22. Pic of the one near downtown Houston..

Somehow this makes up a little for the TV ad that DeLay threatened to sue us for, and Time Warner pulled off the air. He was going to sue Howard Dean and DFA as well. It was a darn good ad, and I guess they pulled it because they were afraid of those of us paid for it getting sued. Turns out Joel Hefley was dismissed from the ethics committee after October, right after that. It would have been right to leave it up, but it was right before the election. Guess that is why.

Here was the great diary on this at Kos.
