Cheney's New Meme? "the other faith" when describing Democrats!
Cheney's New Meme?
by Coldblue Steele
Wed May 4th, 2005 at 12:52:25 PDT

Darth was down in Georgia the other day for a Republican-only town hall on, you guessed it, "Strengthening Social Security". Most of what he said is nothing more than the misleading drivel we've heard time and again, but there was one interesting statement

"If we don't do anything at all, if we just stay where a lot of people have said we ought to stay -- there are a number of members of Congress OF THE OTHER FAITH who have said that we don't need to do anything -- well, if you don't do anything, the net result will be, for somebody today, say, in their 30s, by the time they get to retirement age, their benefit levels are going to be cut some 26 percent or 27 percent. Automatic, that's what will happen with today's existing law."

The other faith?

But wait. It gets picked up and repeated.

Unlike Bush, Cheney will actually take questions from the audience, which isn't really all that bold since it's packed with wingnuts. So here are two questions submitted

Q Mr. Vice President, thank you for coming to Georgia, and thank you and the President for your leadership in the war on terror. Millions of Americans appreciate that.
My question is, I watched the press conference the other night with the President, and it seems like when the two of you come up with serious ideas that those from THE OTHER FAITH, in the other party, all they do is demonize and, in many cases, just lie and try to divide the older generation, our grandparents from us, those in our 30s.

That's one. Here's another

Q Good morning, Vice President Cheney. I'd like to ask a question. This morning you've really delineated very well a lot of points in the program and what you and the President want to do. Could you delineate for us, because I think we have a little bit of an easy audience this morning on convincing us of this program -- could you delineate out a few other points from the other side, or THE OTHER FAITH, differences maybe in what you're saying this morning, and maybe what they're saying or not saying?

Are we seeing a pattern developing here?

is obviously in a bad manner. OTHER FAITH. Now that could mean being Santanist for all you know. It means we're not of the same faith as them even though there are Christian democrats as myself. I find it as an insult.

47. Insulting - yes and it is backfiring on them.
My republican, Bush**voting mom stood in my kitchen yesterday afternoon and stated her disgust with FrankenFrist because of his participation in unJustice Sunday. She didn't appreciate what the repubs did in relation to Terri Schiavo. She is disgusted with 'the use and abuse' of christianity, and the idiocy of Dobson's Focus on the Family, Falwell, Robertson, etc.

I immediately stated that a friend, who had moved back to CO a few months ago, has mentioned to me that the repubs around the area where she is are freaking out with the push to a theocracy, the abuses of power of this repub administration, etc. and stating that they won't go quietly and perhaps it's time to lock and load.

My mother giggled, then looked very serious and stated that she had no intentions of living under 'their rule' either.

Just keep on pointing out their extremism 'cause the 'Eisenhower republicans' are getting upset, too.

Let's see how long it takes until it's used by the MSM; less than a week, I'm guessing.

I'm a Democrat and a Christian--and I KNOW that it wasn't an accident, nor is ti harmless.

54. YES! indeed- the exact meaning of
"faith" according to the bible, which Fundies' say is thier 'rule book' and 'inerrant, inspired and 'God breathed' is-

" Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Repub. 'christ'ians are awful big about storing up for themselves 'treasures on earth' about 'giving the best seats' to those who are 'wealthy'- Justifing NOT turning the 'other cheek' or when you come down to the very 'gut' of it- Placing thier LIVES and TRUST in "God" or any 'power' other than that we can 'touch' or 'see' or 'wield'-
Bombs, money, things- an "ownership society"? that's not faith-
that's selfish-

Christ was only ever furious or violent when confronted with those who paraded thier 'religiosity' around for all to see, while piling burdens on the 'least' and making themselves 'rich' and 'powerful' in 'the name of God'-

Cheney's right, i DON'T share "his" faith- THANK GOD-

kinda bites them in the butt-

i wish they were as 'wise' as doves' or as gentle as sepents, who often only strike when threatened, not out of greed -

Serpents kill to eat, and live, not out of a desire to 'control' others-

(but i get your point)

i can't in all good concience call myself a 'Christian' anymore- because it has become twisted into the exact opposite of what i know him to be- My faith isn't in 'religion' but in Christ, and His teachings-

He's trying to start a religious war, and use that goad to whip up his supporters whenever there's an election.

It's sick, and evil, and possibly illegal. He's turning he town meeting into a madrassa for adults.

Don't these slimy fucks have ANY idea what they're shredding to stay in power? Do they care if they rend the nation apart to keep a death grip on the conduits of money and power? Don't they have any shame at all? Don't they realize that, ultimately, they'll destroy what they're attempting to sieze?

It's a further attempt to equate Republican with Christian and Dems or 'the other faith' as anti Christian, this is definitely BAD. Very, very, bad if they get away with it. I doubt they can its overreaching and I think people will see it for the cynical manipulation it is. Perhaps for once, they will suffer for underestimating the intelligence of the American people

73. While not a religious person myself . . .
I know a lot of good people who also happen to be religious. And while I come from California (not exactly dead center on the attitude-o-meter), and so am not necessarily hearing from the no-opposable-thumb crowd, these people are appalled and disgusted by the attempted hijacking of religion by Schimpanski and his Clot of Snot.

That's one reason Dem pols tend to profess religion even if they aren't especially religious themselves: they realize that many non-religious voters are tolerant enough to acknowledge that religious people are NOT crazy, while giving comfort to liberal religious people that their faith won't be mocked or dismissed.

We need ALL voters who support democratic ideals if we are to garner a large enough majority to overwhelm the rigged voting systems installed by rightwing traitors across this country.

That's why they call it a big tent, and for this and a lot of other reasons, it's still a very good (political) idea.

Political differences are NOT faiths, but Oh, how the republicans wish they were! Because *everyone* knows they have Christianity all locked up!

What's left for the Dems, then? Atheism, or, horrors, Islam? They would like the political wars in this country to be Holy Crusades.

It's a horrifying move on the part of the administration -- absolutely a part of the Dominionist agenda. Honesty... I didn't think Cheney was one of them. Evil turd, yes, theocrat... well I'm surprised.

11. I think it is ugly and a continuation of the religious "swiftboating" the
Republicans are trying to do to the Democrats on religion.

I think there are tons of implied negative undertones to the phrase.

More of the "code word" politics the Republicans love such as when Bush mention the Dred Scott decision during one of the debates.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2108083/

Why Bush Opposes Dred Scott
It's code for Roe v. Wade.

"In the Oct. 8 debate, President Bush baffled some people by saying he wouldn't appoint anyone to the Supreme Court who would condone the Dred Scott decision. Dred Scott was, of course, the famous 1857 Supreme Court decision that affirmed slaves remained the property of their owners even when taken to free territories and that prohibited even free African-Americans from becoming U.S. citizens. Since the Civil War and the subsequent passage of the 13th and 14th amendments, Dred Scott v. Sandford has been a dead letter in American jurisprudence. Yet Bush felt compelled to reassure TV viewers that he wanted no truck with its legal reasoning:

"Another example would be the Dred Scott case, which is where judges, years ago, said that the Constitution allowed slavery because of personal property rights".

-snip-
What was the meaning of this borderline-incoherent ramble? Apparently, it was an invisible high-five to the Christian right. "Google Dred Scott and Roe v. Wade," various readers instructed me, and damned if they weren't on to something. To the Christian right, "Dred Scott" turns out to be a code word for "Roe v. Wade." Even while stating as plain as day that he would apply "no litmus test," Bush was semaphoring to hard-core abortion opponents that he would indeed apply one crucial litmus test: He would never, ever, appoint a Supreme Court justice who condoned Roe."

13. They like going back to the Civil War
back when the Dems were the ones into state's rights, only on the wrong issue.

I hate it when they call themselves "the Party of Lincoln." They bear no resemblance at all to the Republicanism of that day and age. I should know when we changed places, but I can't think of it right now.

So it seems like they enjoy bringing up the Civil War, and trying to paint us as the party of racism. That's another reason bringing up Dred Scott, I suppose.

51. Exactly. They want to divide religious people from the Democratic
Party. The last election showed that they have already done a good job of it.

I know people who are not religious may think "good riddance" but that is a good way to become a permanent minority party in this Country.

Many of us who may feel alienated or have conflicted feelings about the Church's we grew up in (I'm Catholic) are Democrats because of the values we learned as kids - the ones that seem out of vogue now with the ascendancy of the Religious Right.

I bet Karl Rove and Company has discovered they are going to lose the fiscally responsible, socially moderate or liberal Republicans (i.e. the Northeastern type of Republicans that are dinosaurs in the party now) because they are NOT fiscally responsible OR socially moderate.

The Republicans new targeted voter is the socially conservative religious fundies whose economic interests are totally opposite of the Corporate interests who the Republicans serve every day. However, they will vote for the Republicans because of the wedge issues - gay marriage - ekkkk! abortion - aggghhhh! and screw themselves financially.

18. yeah, a pattern of shills asking the questions
they wouldn't have picked that up like that. They were suppose to repeat that for him. Pugs go by the same principles and marketing techniqes that a big company would use to get you to use their products. Part of that is repeat the message using key or trigger words and phrases.

Another part is fear. Scare them into thinking that they need something. Like I saw one of the car makers doing with the on star thing or whatever. It has a little boy saying something like "what happens if our car gets car jacked, with my little brother inside?"

Marketing techniqes. It's not new its just the pugs have been the only ones willing to use them 100%. That's because they are based on duping people into believing what you want them to believe. Most people have a limit of how much duping of people they are willing to do. Obviously, under Roves plan, our government does not have a problem with duping the American people.

24. The phrase is new
...but this pattern's been in place since "I'm a uniter" took office. Bush**, his staff, and Republicans on the Hill have made it crystal clear that the only Americans who matter are Christian Republicans; everyone else is inferior, and no opportunity should be wasted to exclude them and treat them like dirt.

25. Hitler tactics?
Checked out the DailyKos thread on this subject (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/4/155225/5465), and saw this post:

Straight from Mein Kampf... (none / 0)

Some people have speculated whether this language might be something that Hitler would have used.
The answer is yes.

I searched for the phrase "other faith" (andere Glaube) in Mein Kampf, and no surprise, it makes an appearance...

"Jeder andere Glaube fußte auf großer Überschätzung des eigenen Könnens."

Translated into English (roughly): "Every other faith greatly overestimated its own abilities."

Just sayin'.

32. Scary indeed
And here people don't like it when you compare Bush to Hitler. Sorry to say but you have to talk about it to know what's going on. Even the Germans realize what's going on. :\ On AAR they have a commercial for Will Durst's comedy cd and he's talking about how the Germans said Bush's policies were Nazi-like and he says: "We just got called Nazi by Germany!" Think about it.

"God, guns, gays(extermination of); these are the things A LOT OF PEOPLE live and die by. Nothing else matters to them. Their economic status, and other "worldly" matters, don't really matter to them. If they come to "believe" some individual who wants to be President of the US is "Gods choice", who are they to argue.

37. Do we think it's time to lift the curtain on what the Cheney/Bush "faith"
...really is?

ALL Republican Presidents since the 19th c have gone to Bohemian Grove in July.

They have a night when they dress up in robes and worship a giant Owl, representing Money and Power. A "human sacrifice" is rowed across the river and presented to the Owl. The celebrants dance around with torches and bow down to the Great Owl.

Believing in the living God, I would rather be of the "other faith" myself.

46. This is even more insidious than the usual--they are trying to
grasp on to the middle of the political spectrum AND divide the Left (believers vs. non, Christian vs. Muslim, Jew, etc).

This is a blatant effort to win the middle/red staters (perhaps we are having an impact?) and divide the left along lines of religion and faith.

Even without knowing the agenda, I already can see this.

45. The "other" faith?...
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:54 AM by Totally Committed
I believe that:

**** All children should be fed, housed, have medical insurance, equally educated, and wanted.

**** All people should be equal. No color, sex, or religion should be "better" than another.

**** All poor people should get the "hand up" they need, for as long as they need it until there are no ,ore "poor" in the richest nation on the face of the earth.

**** All seniors should have whatever they need to live out their lives with health, security, and dignity.

**** All people in America should be truly "FREE" before we decide for them that they should have our "freedom" brought to their front door.

**** All soldiers should be volunteers. That the military is a true career choice, and not just the only choice for some poor kid of color who was under-educated on purpose to be used as cannon-fodder.

**** All the media should be working to inform and educate the people -- completely independent from any political party or affiliation.

**** All hate is wrong.

**** All justice should be blind.

**** All wars should be fought only, only, only as a last resort.

If this makes me the "other" faith... well, I like that just fine, thank you!

TC

52. He's to DISMISS growing voices of anti-Republican Christians.
Across America the church-going see CONs as liars and cheats. So Cheney gives them a word to describe and dehumanize: those of the OTHER religion.

This:
. names them
. dehumanizes them
. solidifies CONned rectitude (They're wrong; we must be right.)
. quells discussion

Careful not to further divide, only enough to excuse not discussing. They can still be in the same church. Not ready to split the church, yet. Splitting now would involve DIsCusSion -- a no no.

They, the other:
. demonize
. lie
. divide generations
. aside from create CoNtroVeRSy (egads)

The divisioning is dangerous. Could backfire. Good to have the pundits take the fall for starting it.

Churches may divide years from now. And, there has been a movement to incorporated language into church constitutions that the rights of ownership belong to those who hold more literality in their faith. The reason for this is becoming more clear.

59. The relativistic trick is a cheap one.
Just say that everything is relative, and therefore nothing can be judged in the end. It's BS. Rationality is what will allow us as a society to continue existing. Leaving it to chance and religious fantasy can only lead to doom.

60. It's actually very clever propaganda.
By saying that democrats are "the other faith" what he's really saying is that Republicanism is a "faith".

Think about it for a second. Adherence to a faith is something most people will never change. I, for example, am a Christian. It would be very hard for me to imagine how I might at some point convert to Judaism or Islam. On the other hand, in my life I've gone from right-leaning independent to socialist to plain old democrat without any kind of ritual, ceremony or significant change in my non-political life.

This is an attempt to make Republicanism into a religion, with the hope that it will cement adherents more firmly into the fold and squelch dissenting voices within the puke party. Dissent is now not just disagreement, its blasphemy, right?

Exalting party adherence to the level or above the level of real faith is a favorite totalitarian gimmick, ala the Nazis, the Khmer Rouge or the Stalinists. In this lexicon political idealogy is as important as religion.

This also is an attempt to marry republicans with christians, of course, but that's nothing new.

What a frightening turn of phrase!
