Dear <trof>, Again, my thanks for posting this at DU. It appears that the last few paragraphs were somehow dropped from the e-mail you received. Here's the part of my note that was missing.
- - - - - - - - - >> So what constructive liberal alternative suggestions would you have >> for the U.S. Government at this moment in history? "Liberal?" What implies I'm a liberal? By virtue of not agreeing with you? Peoples beliefs, concerns and opinions are a lot more complicated than one side or the other. Terms like "liberal" and "conservative" (what is conservative today...runaway deficit spending?) only benefit politicians and the media, so stop regurgitating. I can, however, make some suggestions: 1. When fighting a war, don't do lab experiments in force deployment. Send two, three times the amounts of people wherever you need to go get the job done, the way General Schwarzkopf and General Powell exercised "overwhelming force" in 1990-1991. Fighting a war on the cheap (without sufficient men and material deployed) just gets people hurt and killed and prolongs the effort. 2. If you're the President, don't willfully ignore good intelligence simply because it's not politically advantageous for your cause. The lives of your soldiers depend upon it, as well as your good judgment and rational decision-making abilities. 3. Don't resort to bombastic, inflammatory rhetoric to win over the public. Democracy and free speech is ultimately the victim. 4. Always do the right, honest thing. As civil servants, you are ultimately answerable to a Higher Power ~ the people of the United States ~ and in the case of elected officials, it's a temporary job, so get it right the first time and maybe we'll re-elect you. 5. End lobbying. 6. Enforce the laws of the country, don't change them when you don't like how the affect you personally (note to Tom DeLay and Bill Frist). I could go on. >> Let me guess, plant more trees, sit under them, hug them and eat >> French fries while reading the LA or New York times as your gospel >> and along with them continue to verbally attack America and our >> President while waiting for the next terrorist attack? Are we going to declare war on earthquakes? We know they're going to happen, so we do everything in our power to limit the effects of their destruction, and if possible, practice prevention in terms of building codes, building sites, etc. Preparation heightens confidence, and when you're confident you're less likely to panic when something does happen. Aside from the illusion of security still prevalent in the nation's airports, I'm reasonably sure this nation is doing everything it can to avoid another 9/11-style, or other, attack by a foreign power or group of terrorists. Attacking a nation that had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks may have been a deviation from this course, but I sleep at night knowing there are a lot of good people in and out of government who are putting their lives, careers and asses on the line to keep the nation as safe as possible. In the meantime, we must educate ourselves on what to do when something occurs, how to react, how to respond and prepare. Such an attack may happen again. Knowledge is strength, power, and builds confidence in what to expect from the unknown. Ignorance fosters panic, hysteria, and paranoia such as the kind you display again and again in your notes. A good environment is in everyone's best interest, so unless you know of another planet our kids can move to after we ruin this one, let me know. The current cycle of destruction and consumption and destruction will only yield resources and materials for so long, but simply by virtue of being able to take what we want doesn't also make said behavior appropriate or right or even sensible. Freedom begs responsibility, and we as a nation are displaying little responsibility these days as we roll back good sense environmental legislation that keeps the water, air and the food we eat safe for all of us (not just those of us that can afford bottled water and hermetically-sealed and grown food). By driving vehicles like Hummer and Excursions and continuing a cycle of throwing away that which we barely use, we simply raise a middle finger to the notion that the land is not ours, we are only borrowing it from our children...so take some responsibility for yourself as a citizen of the planet instead of simply feeding off the vine of it's good tidings. Do you have something against planting trees? As far as the French dig goes, hey, the French annoy everyone, but do you know which country gave us the Statue of Liberty? More importantly, do you know which country's navy blocked Cornwallis's access to the sea in 1781, thereby ensuring an American victory over the British at Yorktown and the end of the Revolutionary War? Yes Jane, the United States' final step to freedom in the Revolutionary War and one of it's most conspicuous, inspiring signals of freedom and hope was a result of what nation? By the way, we can say thanks for the deal we got on the Louisiana Purchase as well. Jefferson bought it from Napoleon...because Napoleon needed the money to fund his war machine. Warmest regards, Tommy
