Alterman raises a question for fellow liberals
If liberal Eric alterman at MSNBC can't answer the question, "What do Liberals Stand For?", then we might help him here at DU. Here are some of my first thoughts:

- We believe in a government that cares for the people and have demonstrated it with programs like Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Family Leave; programs that, of course, have met with -- and still meet with - resistance from conservatives.
- We - the real liberals - are compassionate about human suffering. We see tragedy and injustice in an invasion and occupation of Iraq that has resulted in so much death and destruction in Iraq, and we say so every day.
- We believe in separation of church and state, and that religion is a personal matter.
- We believe in scientific progress and evolution; that is, all liberals share that belief but not all conservatives.
- This liberal, at least, wants accountability from our leaders and is outraged to see that conservatives do not; their double standards on ethical - even criminal - questions tell us they really stand for nothing at all.

That seems quite enough, I think, to show marked differences between liberals and conservatives. To see Alterman's comments, go here:

1. I would say the cornerstone of liberalism is Equal Opportunity
Equal Opportunity really means opposing discrimination, and making sure that all Americans have access to health care and education.

2. Alterman is correct.
Unfortunately, Alterman didn't enumerate the supposedly superior list of what cons "stand for." If he did, that list would probably be surprisingly similar to what liberals stand for.

From the snippet that Alterman offers, he may be talking about framed soundbytes (although I think he means more). In that case, liberals ARE lacking.

Even your response was long. That's quite different from "Contract With America." Or how about "Defense of Marriage"? Those 'concepts' are expressed with basically 2 words.

Got a 2 word answer? (get my point?)

3. Progressives oppose oppression in all it's forms. All progressive policy

stems from our fight against concentrations of power.

Note, gun control is the single, solitary exception among some and therefore should not be considered progressive policy, but rather regional policy that many Democrats, who are often living in areas of dense population, support.
