correspondence with a reporter about the Smoking gun memo:

Below you will find my response from Dru at Newhouse regarding a letter I sent her concerning the media under reporting on the Toni Blair smoking gun memo. I had sent her the FAIR article:

Hi Rainy: I wouldn't’t call coverage in hundreds of U.S. media outlets “largely unreported.”

Here’s just one of the stories, this one is from Knight Ridder. That’s a wire service. I checked Nexis (a news database) and this was picked up by dozens of newspapers, many on the front page…

That’s not bad, considering it’s all stuff we’ve known for months now. Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. Old news.

Anyway, as I said, the Knight Ridder story was one of many that ran prominently, mostly last Thursday (May 5). Just because a story isn’t in the media you read/watch doesn’t mean it’s not being covered.

I encourage you to make Knight Ridder one of your news links, it’s a great organization that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. I should know, it’s one of our competitors! J

Best, Dru

Here is my response to Dru:

Dru, I just have to say that your words: "it’s all stuff we’ve known for months now. Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. Old news" is not correct. The people are lead to believe, by our inept media that Bush was mislead by faulty intelligence. This memo proves beyond doubt that Bush was not mislead but that he outright lied to the people to justify an illegal war. The headlines should scream: Bush is a War Criminal. It should be broadcast 24/7 as this is the biggest news ever. But, alas, runaway brides and freak pop stars are more important for ratings and profits.

1. Not too many people read wire services.
And the other MSM reporting I read only said it was causing trouble for Blair and didn't mention Bush. They also completely left out the line "intelligence and facts being fixed around the policy".

And if I had a tin foil hat, I'd say it was on purpose (oh, wait a minute, HERE's that hat!)

2. Tell Dru that NONE of the broadcast media discussed the KnightRidder story
while they dwelled for days on the Runaway Bride.

What Bush did was a CRIME OF OFFICE...an IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE. And noone in the broadcast media thinks it is a matter of discussion?

6. Search WP; ALL you get is on p.5 of an article "Putin & Bush Take a Spin"

The British Memo

Warren P. Strobel and John Walcott of Knight Ridder Newspapers break the American media's silence on this story: "A highly classified British memo, leaked in the midst of Britain's just-concluded election campaign, indicates that President Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by summer 2002 and was determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policy."

_______________

Interesting way to put it..."break the American media's silence..."

"Our "liberal" watchdog media at work alright, speaking truth to power.

No mention of it in the vaunted New York Times.

3. Jim Lampley is totally right
This rightwing cabal has gotten away with fraud, theft, you-name-it, while our media FAILS to do its job. They have A.D.D. -- they're not interested in BIG stories (if Watergate happened today, they wouldn't have the patience to stick with it and expose the truth); all they want is INSTANT ratings. It's Orwellian the way they're tainting future history by failing to report important stories. If it wasn't on the tube or in the papers, guess it didn't happen ...

4. So glib and dismissive
Karl Rove himself couldn't have written a better response to your letter.

5. Just checked my e-mail and this from Dru:
Again, as I said, there has been lots ofcoverage of this latest memo, Knight Ridder being just one. And months agoCondi Rice all but admitted this in front of Congress, there was tons ofcoverage of that.

I just did a Nexis on “Bush andlied and weapons of mass destruction” and within the past year there’vebeen well over 1,000 stories

7. Well, no kidding
I'd bet more than 99% of those Nexis hits are articles and op ed's ridiculing the assertion that Bush lied.

It might be fruitful if Dru could provide even a handful (say 5 to 10) examples of current pieces on the current memo, rather than simply claiming that 1,000+ exist.
