RANT ON --- The COLD WAR IS OVER --- the Military wants to move SOUTH
I am tired of reading all the replies about moving jobs to RED STATES from BLUE... it is mainly BS..

The Military Generals/Admirals want to move SOUTH... During the cold war we had a lot of military bases up north because it is closer to the Soviet Union flying missiles or bombers over the north pole.

I live in the Tampa Bay area with MacDill AFB. If you go to MacDill, you will find the General quarters are built along the Bay. So if you were a Air Force General where would you like to be stationed, up in bumfuck SD or at MacDill AFB with year round golfing....

Same goes for the Navy bases in Maine vs Virgina or Florida...

Rummy's list was put together by General and Admirals in the Pentagon who will be doing duty once they leave the Pentagon at one of the bases they recommend stay open....

Add to that places like Texas with lot of open land in a climate that is warmer than places like SD. Again the pick of the General/Admirals is a no brainier.

RANT OFF :)

7. Sanibel Island in Florida had an observation post during WWII
to spot Nazi U-boats. It continued to be manned until the late 50's or early 60's when the idea of spotting a Russian atomic sub on the surface just became too far out to sell anymore. That had to have been some really cushy duty.

11. I am reading a series of mystery books
that is taking place in upper Michigan. One of the largest in length runways is at an ex-Air Force base near Sault St. Marie Mi. That was because during WWII the locks between the great lakes were thought to have been prime targets for the Nazis to bomb....

That AFB closed a long time ago. :)

14. Somehow the U.P doesn't seem like a prime location for a
mystery series. Who's the author?

9. Oh yeah that's right I remember when on 9/11 when the Georgia Dome-
was destroyed...wait a minute the 9/11 attacks happened in NYC, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. and they're all in the north. You see terrorist attack civilized centers of world commerce and government politics; none of those are in the south. Now what exist in the south makes me feel better that I live in the north.

12. Can't agree with you there
All the major bases in Washington state seem to be gaining. And other than Alaska, you don't get much Norther than here.
