Does anyone remember if Newsweek has had to retract a story before?
It seems like the US media is having trouble covering the Bush Administration these past 5 years. Consider:

CNN and the "yawning boy" story
CNN and the "nuclear power plant" photo
Fox/CNN(?) and the "Kerry/metrosexual" story
CBS and the TANG memo
Newsweek and the "Qu'ron flushing" story

and these are only the ones I can think of off the top of my head while I type this and doesn't include the out-and-out bias or the blatant complacence of some "news" media.

The point is, in my 52 years on this planet, I don't ever recall a major news organization retracting a major story. Hell, I don't even recall them retracting a minor one!

It seems there is a lot of bungling going on in the media lately...

1. Bungling on the part of the media or
manipulation on the part of the power structure? Remember that Newsweek vetted the story with the government and was given the nod prior to publication.

3. Let's be clear about what 'story' is being retracted.
What they're retracting is a story that claimed an internal investigation had confirmed the Koran-flushing incidents. The retraction is completely agnostic regarding the truth of allegations regarding such incidents, and merely re-opens the question of whther any federal inquiry or investigation has yet confirmed such incidents.

There has, as yet, been absolutely no reputable repudiation regarding the allegations of detainees that such incidents occurred!

4. I was wondering if they were set up.
Fineman said they sent it to the Pentagon to review and no one commented on it so they thought it was confirmed.
