Dear Senator Dole:
I am writing with respect to your recent floor statement calling for “an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor” on a short list of President Bush’s federal judicial nominees, which are being held up by Democratic maneuvering.
A critical review of your statement shows you in lock step with the Republican leadership and suggests that you will support and end to filibuster rules.
Upon similar critical review, the Republican leadership’s basis for promulgating such an unprecedented radical move boils down to political hairsplitting. The plain and simple fact is that the Republicans relied upon Senate procedures to block vastly greater numbers of Clinton nominees from ever receiving their own “up or down votes.
Whether such actions occur in committee or on the floor is a distinction worth debate, but not worth changing your longstanding rules.
With due respect, I most strongly urge you to vote against any effort to weaken your existing Senate rules related to filibusters.
Sincerely,
