It's a sad day on DU when a thread on stopping genocide is hijacked
to the point it has to be locked.

If genocide is an important issue to you, and you haven't yet seen the thread or taken action, please go here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1786001&mesg_id=1786001

There was some very good discussion in the thread before the hijacking took place.

4. Pat Buchanan is an undercover DU member....
and he came in the thread to tell us to keep our asses out of Africa's affairs.

He said he spoke to and for the dying people of Darfur....and that they said that they don't need us...and that they are just doing dandy all on their own. The food is actually fine, when they can find it. And that being chased down with machetes has become the national sport of Darfur.

It's sick humor....but then so is Pat.

3. I was so appalled by this. How could anyone be against helping
people who are suffering.

The thread was productive before the hijacking took place.

5. I saw Hotel Rwanda recently
and was surprised at how they only lightly touched on the genocide.
The special features told much more about it.

and yes I agree we need to be doing something over there. but too bad we are stretched thin with the "Iraq" problem, not to mention the Social Security "crisis."

8. I'm sickened by some of the trash initially in this thread....
And the hijacking that diverted attention from the nightmare of human misery that is allowed to exist. How cheap to try to steal attention from an issue that involves hundreds of thousands of lives.

Thank God and DU for the mods and the "delete" function.

9. Rwanda "genocide"
Edited on Wed May-18-05 08:20 PM by murdoch
That article begins with the "horror" of the "Rwandan genocide" where the "world stood by, not caring" and other nonsense.

The truth is the Tutsis have subjubgated the Hutus for centuries, and in 1990 the Tutsi's Rwandan Patriotic Front invaded Rwanda from Uganda in an attempt to bring the Hutus back to subjugation.

The German colonizers had used the Tutsis as colonial administrators for themselves, so when the Hutus and Tutsis began fighting, the Germans, presumably standing on their moral record in their former colonies like Rwanda and Poland, sided with their old (and current) friends the Tutsis.

Hotel Rwanda and all of this other anti-Hutu, pro-Tutsi stuff is a load of garbage. How come the people under the boot of the former colonizers never mind up being the good guys in any of these stories. Thank GOD that the west doesn't give a damn enough about this place to invade. And the same goes for the Sudan.

10. Seemed to me that it shouldn't have been locked...
and possibly some of the posts shouldn't have been deleted.

But, it was and the killing in the Sudan goes on. Talk and threadlocking are cheap.

To get back to the original topic, just reading the daily fishwrap today and no one really knows what the death toll is, what with tossing small children down wells and babies into fires... No one even has a good count of just how many villages have been destroyed.

The atrocities are beyond belief, but without support from the rest of the world, nothing will be done. The present "government" there has effectively kept relief and journalism out with its absurd requirements, and the only solution is to either let the killing go on until it wears itself out, or a paramilitary one. The chance for a "peaceful" solution is long past.

So, who's going in? "Not us," says the rest of the world, and the Africans who could be supported to assist already have their hands full.

Through colonialism and the Cold War, we in the West have created Africa as it is now, and we have washed out hands of it as a lost cause.

I don't have an answer, but the gods must be in tears over this.

11. Sorry, I sympathize but something tells me
this will be locked as well, as it is a thread about a thread, and those usually go bye bye, as the admins would rather you contacted them about such things.

Don't be surprised.
