BRAD BLOG: Religious MI College Students/Profs Object to Bush Appearance!
Students and Profs at Religious Conservative Michigan College Object to Bush Appearance!
Pro-Bush Prof Argues Address Arranged by Political Director Rove 'Not a Political Event'...

According to the Grand Rapids Press, nearly 1000 students and professors from the conservative Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI are taking out a full-page ad to protest George W. Bush's commencement address appearance this Saturday.

Despite a pro-Bush professor's claim in the paper that this is "not a political event", NEWSWEEK is reporting this week that Bush's top political advisor Karl Rove informed a College employee at a "Presidential" event back in March that "Bush was hoping to deliver a graduation speech in Michigan this year and asked if Calvin College, a small Christian school in Grand Rapids, might be a willing venue."

6. It was Karl Rove who approached Calvin College
He was looking for a speaking event in a swing state and figured an evangelical college like Calvin would fit nicely.

2. re: Students and Profs.......
This college is in Grand Rapids, the very heart of the GOP in Michigan. Grand Rapids is home to Amway and the DeVos family.
Protesting against shrub there is like having a KKK march in South Central!

8. Despite Karl Rove's impressions of Calvin College,
most students and professors I have known take the very traditional Christian viewpoints. These are true conservatives, not to be confused with neo-conservatives. Bush, to them, represents the same hypocratic administration we've come to observe here at DU. Any protest will be well supported, as Grand Rapids is also home to a rather tenacious gathering of liberals. Most who grew up there have rather decidedly rebelled against the 'traditional religious values' and by-rote blind faith associated with such communities.

This should be interesting come Saturday.

9. very big deal if true!
Bush has been making appearances at religious colleges since 1999, and he used to get enthusiastic welcomes.

That's a pretty big change in the weather.
