I don't understand why the so-called republican moderates
are finding it so hard to do what is so clearly in their own best interest. They have the most to lose if unlimited debate is curtailed. Clearly they have no influence within the republican caucus. The only time they matter is when the leaders need a super majority. It's their only point of leverage. If 51 votes will get it done the moderates become completely irrelevant. For the moderates, a vote for the nuclear option is tantamount to self-castration. They might as well cut off their own balls and send them up to the Whitehouse in a dispatch box. I can see Karl Rove licking his lips right now. What a dainty dish to set before the boy king.

1. Republican moderates have no backbone. People like
the moderates in the Northeast can't figure out how much power they have and end up bowing to clowns like DeLay.

2. They bow to Delay because he controls RNC purse strings
and if they want party backing come reelection time, they have to knuckle under to whatever the Texas mafia wants.

What kills me is not the wimpy GOP moderates, but the spinless Democrats. They've caved in on issue after issue, appalling appointment after appalling apointment.

The only thing they can do if the GOP rams this through is walk out. That is the only thing that would get my Senator my vote when he runs again.

Otherwise, forget it. He's caved just once too often.

3. Because when you bring in outside issues like base closings
and have a senate majority that can use stuff like that as carrots, the issues become more complex. Take the 2 senators from Maine, for example, who are facing very large military base closings in their states that would result in job losses and critical losses to local communities and their economies. If Frist dangles carrots in front of their noses like "I'll get some or all of your bases off the "close list" if you stand with me" - it muddies the water a lot.

I have no evidence that such might have occured or will occur, but it's not hard to imagine that it could.

4. fear
nothing but fear of having the delayrove money machine back someone else. The fear that some skeleton in some closet will be pulled out to ruin the career for defying the advancement of bushco - and the elevation of power to the executive branch that moves to render representational government (eg Congress) moot.
