Maybe my nostalgia for historic oratory is getting the best of me, but I don't remember yellow and blue charts being pulled out every 5 minutes to "prove" the speaker's point.

I get the impression I am watching some trial on Court TV, not the U.S. Senate.

Not to mention hearing the cliche-du-jour talking point that the party leadership has come up with, in this case UP OR DOWN VOTE, UP OR DOWN VOTE. BRAWWWK!

It wasn't always like this, was it?

1. "We have charts & graphs to back us up, so F*CK OFF!!"
I wore that button on my lab coat for 5 years. It works. :P

4. BRAWWWK! UP OR DOWN VOTE. BRAWWWK!
The level of public discourse is at such an all time low that Senate debate has been lowered to the level of Court TV.

Unfortunately, much of the public is so uneducated and anti-intellectual that one must resort to charts in order to communicate with them. Remember Ross Perot and his charts?

6. I think you hit it with Ross Perot.
He "connected" with the people who are into pictures, I reckon.

10. He "connected" with the people who don't read or research
very much if at all. Not always because they can't but because many times they are too busy with work and family to read and research the issues.

5. Its the Perot factor.
Also look at the increasing use of props. Pocket sized Constitutions, Bibles, Flags, etc.

7. Ross Perot started the chart thing while running for Pres.
He felt it was necessary to get his points across to casual observers. I think he was right - Gore and Kerry should have used them. Most people's eyes glazed over by the third sentence of a complicated explanation and no one ever remembers numbers they hear - only numbers they see.
