Who would have ever thought that the GOP Senators would have folded to Democratic Demands?

I am Shocked!

The last time I was this surprised was this morning when the sun came up.

The Capitol switchboard is still open.

Leave as many voicemail messages with the RINOs as you can.

Then keep calling them tomorrow morning when the staffers get in.

6. true, that.
They shouldn't have even opened the door to this nuclear option threat. Just caused a deeper chasm between the two sides.

16. Such is the nature of compromise.
No one walks away truly happy.

RINOs and DINOs sold their respective sides out on this one because they believed preserving the filibuster was most important.

Personally, I WOULD say we completely lost, but I don't have as much faith as my brethren here that Frist didn't have the nuclear option votes. We'll never really know, but if he DID, we would've lost everything. At least we came away with the filibuster intact.

ugh, damn it to blazes, we could have let these idiots pull the trigger on their precious 'nuclear option' and then called them out in the 2006 elections as the extremists they are.

21. You're right and all, but
then ALL the judges go through, and if they're really the abominations we say they are, we be fucked. There was really no true "winning" in this situation, unless SOMEHOW 6 Republicans voted against the nuclear option (which after watching the Medicare bill pass after it was voted down, I don't necessarily buy it would've happened).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not thrilled at all right now. But I'm not pissed either.

26. If frist had the votes
The GOP wouldn't have made the deal. That's the difference between the GOP and the Democratic Party. They don't pull their punches unless they absolutely have to.

but the Democratic Centrist won big time.

4. Well, the other option could have been they got ALL their judges through
AND we lose the right to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee. THAT would suck.

The WH didn't want this deal.

The WH wanted to only need 51 votes to get through a Supreme Court nominee.

15. The Extreme right lost
Edited on Mon May-23-05 07:22 PM by malaise
even Frist admits that. This appears to be the best solution in the present circumstances.
What's more Bush and Cheney can no longer expect total support from Republican senators. Harry Reid was correct re the right's attempt to grab more power. The right have been checked. Better to win a small battle than lose the war.

And I'm listening to Frist (on MSNBC) complaining that he didn't get everything he wanted. Says he's "disappointed" about at least part of the deal. So if Frist is unhappy, I'm happy.

11. It says A LOT
they've been expecting Frist to neuter the Dems, take away all our power and cut us out of the procedure for good.

Frist can't deliver on that now. Their thirst for our blood remains unsatisfied. They lost. We gave a little. They completely lost because it wasn't so much about the particular judges who now will receive their votes but it was about taking away power from us.

The country's won and the senate has won. Each party has lost something but the Repubs have lost WAY more than we did.

And anytime both sides' partisans are feeling screwed, that's a compromise...and probably the best deal available.

We did win, we can filibuster any supreme court nominee and that may save Roe.

24. Without compromise, Scalia or Thomas would be Chief Justice
I think that we did win. Without the compromise, Bush would have put Scalia or Thomas up as chief justice when Rehnquist retires. Now, we have the threat of a filibuster to use. The nuclear option is on questionable grounds already and I doubt that the GOP wants to use it for a supreme court nomination fight.

27. Goodness that's entertaining
They're almost up to 300 posts. A few are trying to see this as a win for them, but the majority says they're on fantasy island, and that we just sunk the Repub Party. Some are talking about voting third party. Some say they won't be supporting the RNC with donations any more. Some say they feel they were just stabbed, and it hurts worse to know it was family that stabbed them.

32. does anybody else think
that maybe they know exactly what they're doing? Acting like they lost, so Dems think they won, but the truth is, nobody really "won". At best, it was an acceptable compromise. But there's more to come, and acting as if this was a big Dem win will make it easier for them in the future.

I dunno.. just a thought.
