Make a Prediction: Now that the GOP has won, the whores will.....
Like many DUers I correctly predicted that a "face saving" compromise but that the words pryor, brown, and owens will be preceded by the words judge.

Here's the next step: The whores breathlessly sell this as the greatest compromise since 1787.

1. Instead of forcing Republicans to look extreme before 2006, we allow them
Edited on Mon May-23-05 07:18 PM by Democat
to look moderate.

We had a chance to stand by our word and fight and show the country how extreme the Republicans are and that we stand for something. Instead, Democrats did what they always do and gave in.

Now Republicans look better going into 2006 and Democrats look even weaker, if that's possible.

2. And from listening to Frist ......
seems he still has the option of pulling the 'nuclear option' for another day. :wtf: maybe he'll pull it on legislative matters instead of Jucicial ... seems he got the Judges he wanted out of this..... :freak: ?

3. How is he going to do that
he didn't have the votes this time, and I think he just lost some of his superpower.

His religious right base really wanted the nuke. Badly. He's been saying no deal, no deal. That made them happy. He just caved and made a deal. I don't think he can milk that cow twice. The moderates will just come to the rescue again.

I think we won, myself.

5. If he didn't have the votes he REALLY kicked our asses.
If Frist didn't have the votes to pull off the nuclear option and the Dems made this compromise, Reid and his advisors should resign immediately for passing up the opportunity to preserve the filibuster and save America from owens, brown, and pryor.

11. Dewine and Graham said they would vote to nuke if there was no compromise
Nelson said he was undecided. Did he have the votes? Who knows? The question is if Reid know whether or not Frist had the votes.

This is like poker--nobody knows whether Frist had the votes. And we'll never know.

16. I think the Centrist Dems won
Edited on Mon May-23-05 08:11 PM by Geek_Girl
This was clearly a victory for the Centrists Dems. It's a short term victory. It's a shame that the Democratic party can't look at the long haul. This should've of came to a showdown the Dems didn't need to pull their punches on this one.

17. I think it was a victory for the centrists on BOTH sides.
Considering how extreme the president is, this will not be good news for them. I don't think Bush is much into compromise.

Seems to me the NYT had an article either yesterday or today saying how the moderates were gaining strength. I see that as a good thing.

19. Well it's better than the RW nut bags gaining strength
But I think long term for progressive democrats we needed to have this showdown. If we had the votes we could've rubbed their faces in the dirt (which is exactly what we need to be doing every chance we get.) If we didn't have the votes America needed to see the dems go down fighting.

8. Riiiiight: Seven Republican senators who just called avoiding the nuke
a great victory for the people and the institution of the senate are going to turn around and vote for the nuke six months from now? Get real.

12. Sen. Warner is not a moderate. The fact that he was in there working for
a compromise suggests to me that cracks are forming in the Rethug "unity."

It was a victory with sacrifices, but a victory nonetheless.

13. I think our side is somewhat unhappy
But the wingnuttiest of the wingnuts are going apeshit. Do you think they held Justice Sunday only to compromise and not get rid of the filibuster? I think Frist is going to have some 'splaining to do.

This outcome doesn't go with their rhetoric at all. This was supposed to blow us away. The fact that Frist took any kind of deal at all is NOT going over. Bwahahahaha.

15. Things are seldom what they seem ... I think this is what the
neocons wanted all along. To get the judges in. They never meant to push the nuclear option, though it probably shows them who isn't "loyal" and those republicans will face stiff competition and few GOP dollars in their next primary. I wonder how these judges fit into the Fellowship.

That's why I think the Dems lost. The silver lining may be that the few moderate republicans, if the neocons beat them up, may be more open to compromise in the future.

18. But the "Justice Sunday" people don't know that
They think they just got stabbed in the back, I reckon. Regardless of what the politicians wanted, the nutcase supporters wanted it all.

First Schiavo, now this. The Bushies are letting them down. Good.
