Does anyone think that closing Maine's bases backfired on *?
Rove was trying to put pressure on Maine's two senators. But they were both in the moderate coalition. Maybe they stood up to the pressure to do what they thought was right anyway. Or, announcing the planned closings did just the opposite of what Rove wanted: they got angry and decided they weren't going to take it anymore.

Please discuss.

1. Yep, - at least with Collins
Snowe would have gone along with the coalition because Maine has turned quite blue and she is up for re-election. Even as the darling of Maine she could have been flushed. Collins is somewhat the new darling of the Bush regime and would have probably stayed out of the coalition. BUT because Maine is in the mood to ask Papa Bush and his filthy tribe to pack up their shit in Kennebunkport and move, she (even though not up until '08), I think realized that any suggestion of going to bed with George could get her a one way ticket out of the state!!!!!!!!!

3. Or it could just be that some repugs found
they actually have a conscience and some integrity, and didn't want to turn our country into a one-party gang bang.

4. 6 of one half a dozen of another
You'd have to be deluded to think that the Repug Party you joined as a kid is still what it was

Collins and the rest are in for it now from inside their own Party- ask Christie Todd Whitman

5. She's not the darling of this Mainer... or many others that I know. It

would have been lovely to flush her out of the Senate last time around in favor of Chellie Pingree, but she didn't care to use the Clean Election public financing option and just outspent her way back into office. x(

6. Green---I'm talking about Snowe being a fixture - Collins isn't that
entrenched yet. But, as I said, people are mad enough right now that Snowe could be flushed if she doesn't "oppose" George.

7. Oh....now.. Snowe will stay and I will tell you why
1) She occasionally gets things right...ike trying to do something about the midwest air pollution that floats in over us.

2) She has seniority on the Hill. That right there is the main reason she keeps going back, more than any other. She helps keep Maine higher up on the attention chain.

8. I hope the Maine voters can find a good Dem to run against Collins, then.

9. The major base being closed is Portsmouth
A shipyard that repairs boomers. It extends across the state line, so its closing screws New Hampshire as well.

10. Nope, it's in Maine - Kittery
But many employees live in NH and Portsmouth is just across the bridge and businesses will be impacted big time.
