I got a quote from Dwight Eisenhower in my email...
It says something like "Should any political party try to do away with social security and unemployment and labor benefits, you will not hear from that party again." Essentially it would be their daeth knell. He goes on to say that "There will be splinter groups such Texas oil millionares and certain businessmen who will try to do away with it but their attempts will prove to be their undoing." Why wouldn't these idiots pay attention to the last semi decent republican pres.? He seemed to have the inside scoop on what the future of America had in store.

1. Eisenhower also warned America about the military industrial complex
FDR passed over 267 higher ranking officers and chose Eisenhower to lead the world as Supreme Allied Commander during WWII. Wow - FDR knew how to pick 'em.

2. It's been flying around the internet for a few weeks now
It's always fun to quote the "other side" against itself.

3. Hee's the full quote, for those who haven't seen it yet.
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." -- Dwight D. Eisenhower

4. Thanks, I didn't want to write it down.
I just paraphrased. I'd like to learn more about Ike. I didn't like the fact that he didn't have the traditional tea with Truman and the first lady at the time of the transition of power. Gary Sinise did agreat job as Truman in that film. I'd recommend it.

6. Ike could have been a great President.....
Edited on Tue May-24-05 02:36 PM by FrenchieCat
but instead he was only a decent president. He did come up with an end to the Korean War, and presided over an era of highway expansion never before seen. His Shortfall was seen in his lack of resolve against Senator McCarthy....someone whom he disliked but only passively worked behind the scenes to get rid of. He could of done more there, and didn't. So his record is a mixed one, but much better than many others....Republican or Democrat.

One could say, that his greatest strength was his prescient observations and vision of the "larger picture" on the conditions and frailties on the States of the Americas.

Here are some other of his insightful quotes:

"I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity."

"If all that Americans want is security they can go to prison. They'll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government."

"The only way to win World War III is to prevent it."

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."

"Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

"Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in the blood of his followers and the sacrifices of his friends."

"What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog."

14. Ike really didn't do a whole lot.
He bascially ran his presidency by dividing powers between his cabinet members and letting them run the country. Eisenhower picked good people to run his cabinets, but provided very little direct control.

5. Eisenhower was brilliant.
"Every bomb launched, every gun fired constitutes a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, and those who are cold and are not clothed."

9. full quote ...
Edited on Tue May-24-05 02:40 PM by cmt928
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under clouds of war it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.
-------Dwight David Eisenhower

I printed that the day the war started with Iraq and have had it on my cubicle wall ever since. What a true thought that is!

There is also a good article written by his son that blasted dubya and the repukes last year - stating they are not the republicans his father was!

on edit - a brief snip and link to story by John Eisenhower
http://www.theunionleader.com/Articles_show.html?article=44657&archive=1

The fact is that today’s “Republican” Party is one with which I am totally unfamiliar. To me, the word “Republican” has always been synonymous with the word “responsibility,” which has meant limiting our governmental obligations to those we can afford in human and financial terms. Today’s whopping budget deficit of some $440 billion does not meet that criterion.

12. Eisenhower wouldn't even recognize the Republican Party of 2005....
It is a monster controlled by those very forces he warned against.
Hopefully, the monster will devour itself soon.
