name is W. Mark Felt and he's 91 years old now.

Old and sick, or just wants to leave something for his heirs? . . . Can't very well capitalize on it when you're dead.

He's kept his secret all these years, and Woodward and Bernstein said they would tell the world only after he was dead. Presumably, that was how he wanted it. So what made him change his mind?

If W and B had a deal with Felt, then the deal is no longer valid since Felt has confessed.

Unless of course Felt is not Deep Throat.

Vanity Fair feature, book deal, done now so his family can exercise control over future rights. It will be interesting to see how hard the neocons will attack a sick, ninety-one year old man. I really want to hear his story.

From what I've read this morning, his daughter wanted him to so that they might benefit financially for his grandchidren's education.

Woodward has just confirmed it was Deep Throat.

It seems that his family has a strong financial motive for pushing Felt to "confess", and the reaction of Woodward and Bernstein is intriguing.

I will wait till they confirm this claim before I will believe it.

As a side note, why would the number two man at the FBI be privy to private information from within the White House? Weren't many of the Deep Throat revelations indicitive of a person inside the WH?

I guess it just seems strange to me that the FBI would know so much on this at the time - after all if you were involved in a criminal conspiracy would you tell the FBI?

From what I have read it seems even more implausible. I don't see any direct quotes from Felt, just his daughter saying what she was told etc That part about here not recognising Bob Woodwards name, even after spending a week fielding phone calls from reporters about Watergate, just strikes me as a bit strange.

about Watergate and his daughter asked some question about who Deep Throat was. Then he either mis-spoke or decided it was time and he said something like, "I felt it was my duty to do what I did" and she was surprised.

I have heard he's not in good health, so perhaps the family wanted to "scoop" the story. There are many avenues open to them now if he is truly Deep Throat. While he's still alive they can "plumb" (how appropriate) his mind and release the info. Of course, they may not have ulterior motives at all.
