25. In one sense FOX is correct..........
You're reading it as if the word positive refers to something good. But FOX uses positive to refer to 78,000 as a positive number, which it is. One is a positive number. Of course, as you know, anything less than zero is a negative number.

So FOX is simply using the word positive in one context while knowing that most people will think of it in an entirely different context.

This way they can make Bush sound good without technically lying.

3. I heard the same spin on NPR
It's really a good thing that we only added 78,000 jobs (while losing many more), because then there will be no need to raise interest rates further.

Tell it to someone out of work, NPR and Fox.

6. How many people entered the workforce in May?
Is this number included in the employment gain? If the economy adds jobs while the workforce grows, an increase in unemployment is logically possible.

14. Ah, but if you parse their idiotic headline...
they're not claiming there were positive numbers....what they're doing is pretending that if there had been, then it would have made Wall Street happy...

24. The economy needs to gain about
130,000 a month to keep up with the workforce growth so in all practical terms there are about 50,000 more people looking for work last month.

Stock declines accelerate

Major gauges tumble as investors eye weaker payrolls report, rising oil prices, bond yields.
June 3, 2005: 12:30 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Stock declines picked up speed Friday afternoon, as investors eyed a weak May payrolls report, rising oil prices and Treasury yields

-snip-
Employers added 78,000 to their payrolls in May, the government said early Friday, far below forecasts for 175,000, according to a consensus of economists surveyed by Briefing.com. Employers added 274,000 to their payrolls in April.

11. I remember some time back,
there was a quote from a guy at a Kerry rally I think who said something like...

"Yeah, they've created lots of jobs...I should know...I have 3 of them!"

He had been in high-tech management making $100K+, now he had 2 fast food jobs and a WalMart job, trying not to lose his house.

Proving the old saw there're lies, damn lies and statistics.

28. from the "far left" NY Times:
source: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/03/business/03cnd-econ.html

U.S. Economy Added Only 78,000 Jobs in May

WASHINGTON, June 3 - Job creation slowed to a crawl in May, the Labor Department estimated today, but the unemployment rate edged down to its lowest point since September 2001.

The nation added only 78,000 jobs in May, less than half the pace of the previous three months and the smallest monthly increase in nearly two years.

The report, far weaker than most Wall Street analysts had expected, quickly rekindled talk of an economic slowdown as well as speculation that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates less than expected. <skip>
