Going to Hell in a Hand Basket – a Quick Perusal of Today’s NYT

You don’t have to be a genius to realize that our nation is heading in the wrong direction under GOP rule. I just skimmed today’s NY Times, and came up with the following:

1. page A,9; a story on how Latin Nations are resisting U.S. calls for creation of a committee to monitor democracy. Is it any wonder when more than one half year after the Ohio fiasco not a single question has been answered by the Ohio Secretary of State to explain the massive irregularities?

2. page A, 10; a story on Texas Governor Rick Perry having a bill signing at an Evangelical School. Does separation between church and state have any meaning any more for the Republican party?

3. page A, 11; First Lady Laura Bush comes under fire for seeming to endorse a repressive regime in Egypt. Do we really have the credibility to advocate for liberties and democracy abroad at this point in time?

4. page A, 15; Missouri flies Confederate Flag at memorial service. Does anyone think elections don’t matter when the GOP Governor made this happen?

5. page A, 16; Sen. Biden urges U.S. to close Guantanamo. And this from an original supporter of the War. At least Senate Judiciary seems willing to hold hearings on the abuses. We’ll see.

6. page A, 22; Now we’re on the editorial page. Excellent editorial reminding us that the only thing stopping an historic world commitment to alleviate poverty in Africa is the U.S. Government. And for a fraction of the cost of the Iraq war.

7. page A, 22; Great piece by the Editorial Observer comparing the present unease to the mid 1970's in the wake of Watergate and Vietnam. Is there a silver lining? Adam Cohen notes the time could be ripe for a change of political control in the U.S.

8. page A, 23; Finally, the op-eds. Bob Herbert has another great column, this time on class war in America and Bush and GOP doing everything in their power to expand class injustices in America.

Did I miss anything?

2. Conyers actually takes the time to READ the NYT - does he ever sleep?
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 11:36 PM by Nothing Without Hope
And he is so right about its going to hell in a handbasket. Did you see the NYT piece the other day that portrayed the horrible criminal CIA practice of kidnapping and outsourcing torture and "disappearance" - EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION - as a patriotic, mysterious, exciting 007-style lark? No hint of the illegality or atrocity it really is:

Thread title: "CIA's EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION finally comes to the NY Times - sort of"

Recommended. At some point it would be good to put in links to the stories he cites.

16. God Bless John Conyers! Signed his letter yet?
www.johnconyers.com - I was on the phone doing business the other day and gave that info to several people I spoke with at several levels. They ALL were receptive.

Make sure you spread it around about what he's doing. The more people know, the sooner we're RID of these jackals!

10. Actually, it's not the JOURNALISM he's talking about, it's the EVENTS
that the articles describe. He's NOT dissing the NYT or journalism, he's slapping the GOP leadership of the country:

"You don’t have to be a genius to realize that our nation is heading in the wrong direction under GOP rule. I just skimmed today’s NY Times, and came up with the following..."
http://www.conyersblog.us/archives/00000128.htm

He also links to the articles, which took extra care at the end of what must have been a long and tiring day. His post on this was put up at 11:09 PM ET, and I imagine his day will start early tomorrow.

Guess noone told him he's getting elderly and is expected to slow down. He clearly thrives on fighting the good fight, thank goodness.

20. That is my take too...
I don't think he is referring to shoddy journalism, I think he is referring to a shoddy state-of-affairs in the world.

11. It's not an easy time to be a news junkie.
It's like being a fan of a perpetually losing team. You keep hoping for some good news but it doesn't come very often.

12. I'm reading this as US going to hell, as evidenced by these NYT headlines
Please read for correct meaning.

Not meaning to slag you, I appreciate this post.

But these are not instances of shoddy journalism he is highlighting. They are articles reporting yet more GOP evil. For just one example from that linked page,
page A, 10; a story on Texas Governor Rick Perry having a bill signing at an Evangelical School. Does separation between church and state have any meaning any more for the Republican party?

Conyers' comment about separation of church and state is a remark about the event, not about the NYT's coverage.

Also please note #6, 7 and 8 where Conyers is applauding the editorials and op-ed for great truth telling.

13. Well, the NYT might just survive as a form of press in New America
Once we deal with Bush**, his slimy gang and anyone else who stands in the way of OUR COUNTRY, I mean. The next step will be to re-license the media outlets. Not reporting facts? Have a history of spinning the news? Sorry, you don't get to call yourself PRESS anymore. Here's a nice "I poured the kool-aid and all I got was this button" button for you.

I don't know where Mr. Conyers finds the time or energy to do all he does. Sometimes I swear there must be more than one of him on Capitol Hill. If only!

15. all the readers posting about that are correct--
attack is on the state of the country, using NYT articles as documentation. You should edit the original post to reflect that.

17. You are exactly right -- the Times is far from perfect...
and has lent itself to some seriously misguided and destructive stories, but it is bringing these stories to light.

18. Correct analysis
This is not meant as a slam on the NYT itself, although they certainly have been a part of the problem, it is using one day's paper as a looking glass at 8 separate issues which have (or have not) entered the public consciousness.

He is single-handedly taking it to this administration. He gives me hope. He really does. I feel better knowing someone like John Conyers is in Washington DC. He's going to save our country.
