CWA Local 1400 Endorses Howard Dean for President
CWA Local 1400 Endorses Howard Dean for President

1,800 Member Union Cites Gov. Dean's help in Contract Negotiations and General Support for Worker Rights

MANCHESTER--The Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1400 gave their endorsement to Governor Dean at a meeting in Portsmouth. The New Hampshire-based union, representing 1,800 workers at Verizon, cited Governor Dean's help in recent CWA contract negotiations and his support for worker rights in general as the reasons behind their endorsement.

"I am very pleased to have the support of CWA Local 1400," Governor Dean said. "Local unions such as these are fighting every day to keep good jobs in New Hampshire. They understand what President Bush's irresponsible economic policies have done and with their help, we will take this country back."

"When we were struggling to negotiate a new contract with Verizon last August, Howard Dean was there for us," said Don Trementozzi, president of CWA Local 1400 and a Verizon customer service representative in Worcester, Mass. "He supported our campaign to keep good-paying telephone company jobs in New England and stop Verizon from cutting our medical benefits."

The union cited its appreciation for Governor Dean attending a CWA picket at a Verizon Wireless store in Burlington, Vermont, as well as appearing at a labor rally at the General Electric non-union plant in Hooksett, New Hampshire, to support the CWA activists present. At the CWA Local 1400's request, Governor Dean also intervened with the management of the SHARE Group, a Somerville, Mass. telemarketing firm that employs CWA members.
