Why all the hate?
Hey!

Just lookin thru posts and I see a lot of distain for the President which is understandable (and correct)

I dont get why "Hes a Fratboy!" is such a thing tho.

Comon guys. Frats aint bad. The President is. Hes bad independent of his Fraternity. I mean like 80% of our Presidents were Fratboys!

1. Frats suck
and Bush sucks most of all. He is the dumbest shit to occupy the White House.

I got drafter under Johnson, wage & price controls under Nixon, gas lines under Carter, lost my job in a hostile takeover under his old man, and under him my job was offshored to India. this is the worst economy and the worst president I have ever seen.

9. No they dont.
Frats dont suck.

Making blanket statements based on the media portrayal of Fraternities is unfair.

What information have you used to draw that conclusion?

Is it reverse deduction.

Bush is a Fratboy
Bush is bad
QED Fratboys are bad.

Sorry man, that logic wont fly.

3. Um, in my experience "frat boy" is an insult ...
and a well-deserved one, at that. Are there exceptions? Yes, of course. However, Bush embodies everything that is bad about fraternities -- and that's a long list.

7. I dont see it.
Fraternities cant be blamed for his behavior.

Fraternities are social organizations in college that have, nowadays, become increasingly focused in community and school service.

Whats the stereotypical Fratboy? Alcoholics? Bush isnt anymore.

Bush is a rich, meglomaniacal, authoritarian Christian.

In my experience, Fraternities are more about close friends and good times. Not the enforcement of religion and objectivist economics.

20. Umm - sure - whatever.
Guess my personal experience was all imaginary.

"Frat boys" have gotten their dubious reputation because they have spent countless hours EARNING it thru their actions.

Sure there are EXCEPTIONS to this bad rap - BUT THEY ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THE NORM!

I don't much like stereotypical frat boys myself; however, it's not because he's a frat boy that he's the way he is. (I stress the "stereotypical".)

11. With all due respect
There is a difference between internet shorthand and knowing how to spell.

Gotta love how since I'm a Fratboy I am now an enemy.

If you wanna insult my education, have at it. But my education is independent of my Fraternity experience.

I think you should judge the President in a similar manner.

schools, was a "frat" boy and a Harvard graduate. And now he walks like he's been riding a horse all his life and talks like he was born right down yonder with them good old boys.

He is one big screaming lie. And what is infuriating is some people can't see through him!

But then, Kerry was in the same one, so you probably don't want to hear about that either.

And Junior's main problem with being a "fratboy" is that he never grew out of it.

21. Zero Respect for Frat Boys Here -- and I married one.
He's a wonderful man, but I still shake my head over the fact I married a frat boy. It caused some problems early on in our courtship, too. Frats get ZERO RESPECT from me because they seem to stress "loyalty" to Each Other over ANYTHING else including decency (and yes, I've seen this in real life) via ridiculous initiation rituals, while in reality they are "exclusive" little clubs intended to help you out in later life -- blech! Its a high school clique mentality, with "only the cool kids" allowed to join if they can afford the membership dues.

26. Why are you starting a thread just to pick fights with people?
Fratboy is just an expression. It tends to connote irresponsible behavior, immaturity, and a heavy drinking/partying lifestyle like what is portrayed in the movie Animal House.

I don't have problems with people who belonged to fraternities. I do have problems with people who still behave that way in their fifties, especially when they are the President of the United States.

As for the subject of hate. I hate Bush. I HATE, HATE HATE him. You got a problem with that?

37. Using the word "asshole" to describe the President
does assholes a disservice. The people who call him a chimp are insulting non-human primates. If they can cope with the association then so can fratboys.

And the only reason there's a fight is that you chose to pick it. People are going to continue referring to Bush as a fratboy from time to time. I'd suggest you learn how to deal with it.

29. I knew a woman that once used "Fratboy" as the ultimate
derogation. She bought the stereotype that so many seem wedded to: drunk pre-dropout racist rapists. This was in grad school.

She wound up working with some on a committee. The "advocacy group" reps were useless--if the committee didn't give their projects money, the organization the committee controlled could die, taking 300 full time and 10k student jobs with it.

The fratboys and other miscreants saved the organization. She was surprised to learn along the way that one fratboy had worked on the '92 Clinton/Gore campaign when he was in highschool; another had interned with a dem congressman in DC, after having worked on his election campaign; a third was chair of the university dem organization on campus.

Others had tutoring programs on campus, many had tutoring programs in disadvantaged schools in the community. Most had big brother programs. As far as date rapes ... not worse than the dorms. But the dorms lacked anything, but a rock/singing contest and organized basketball.

When I was an undergrad, many years before this, the frats maintained test/tutorial files, open to all the students. Parties early in the semester; late in the semester, they had regular tutorial and test-prep sessions, increasing in frequency and duration as finals appeared. (They also had much better food than the dorms.) Almost pledged, but they couldn't work out how to have required weekend projects with an observant 7-day christian.

31. Thanks
Yeah. I've seen only good come from Fraternities.

They do some damage in some places, but thats because of stupid people, not the organization itself.

I dont understand how people here can say that my "group" is to be treated like dirt, while other groups are to be held sacrosanct.

40. A frat friend of mine I think said it best --
"Best friends money can buy."

I don't buy into any of these blanket stereotypes about fraternities, having known plenty of frat brothers and having been to more of their parties than I can count -- and despite your claims of them not being alcohol-abusing drinking clubs, I gotta say, they threw far and away the best bashes in college.

But I never joined one myself, mainly because of that statement a friend of mine had made. It bothered me that you're essentially paying cash to have people accept you... that and the fact that another friend of mine had to kill a dog during initiation.

41. It seems to me that the frat boys
often get into their little clubs and really fall into the: "we're so cool, we're the best looking and richest dudes around and everybody wants to be in our club and be like us."

The disconnect comes when these frat boys don't realize most people are looking at their little group and its behavior and rolling their eyes, thinking: "Lame."

45. Because I've lived in a college town most of my life,
And the frats and frat rats that occupy them are some of the most despicable, assinine, racist, stuck up, class concious idiots on or off campus, without fail, year in, year out. Yes, some of them do some community service. However the good that is done by these frats via community service is far outweighed by the harm they do to the university and the community at large. Date rapes, on and off campus, the vast majority of the time you find a frat boy at the bottom of it. Drunken riot for no good reason? Started by a frat, with the participation of other frats. Racist symbol out on the lawn? Only at a frat, that is until they were dumb and drunk enough to blow up their little cannon(That would be the KAs, who proudly boast a cannon on the front lawn of every chapter that hasn't admitted a black member) Sad thing is that these boys are now searching around for another cannon for the lawn. I guess they're proud of their racism:eyes:

We have had people, minors in fact, get killed at frat functions. Massive amounts of alcohol poisoning come from the frats, date rapes are an epidemic throughout the Greek community, and violence is never far off. I can't count the number of times that I or someone I know has gotten jumped by a bunch of frat rats, simply because the assholes didn't like the person's race or looks. And what is really funny is they're never brave enough to do this one on one, nope, they travel in packs. And if you kick the shit out of the group, even though they started the brawl, they'll go whine to the cops(yes, that has happened to me personally)

The false sense of entitlement and superiority is also very offputting. They think that they are the elite of campus, while everybody else thinks they're assholes.

Sorry friend, you may be one of the few good frat members, and I realize that there are some out there, and that there are even some decent fraternity organizations. But by and large, from my experience, from looking at the numbers and hearing what others have to say, the vast majority of frats and their members would do the collegiate world a world of good if they simply disappeared.
