Judith Miller in jail

Life Behind Bars

Judith Miller

As Judith Miller of The New York Times approaches the end of her second week in a Virginia jail, reports from behind bars reveal she is enduring stomach problems from jail food. She is also sharing a cell unit that had originally been designed to house just one person. Because of that, Miller had been forced to sleep on a mattress on the floor for a few days but now has her own bed.

"It has definitely dawned on her that this is really in jail -- it is certainly no summer camp," Times Executive Editor Bill Keller told E&P Monday. "The food has not agreed with her and we have been trying to impress on her that she needs to eat. We have been hammering that in."

Surprisingly few stories about Miller's experience in jail have emerged, with just one such story in her own paper. "I don't want to cross over the line into using the newspaper as a promotional vehicle for her case," Keller explained. "The story she is caught up in is a big story -- to the extent she is news we will write about it. We aren't going to start writing a Judy story everyday just to drum up sympathy. That becomes advocacy instead of journalism."

13. The sad sack was a sittin’ on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin’ all alone.
The warden said, hey, buddy, don’t you be no square.
If you can’t find a partner use a wooden chair.
Let’s rock, everybody, let’s rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin’ to the jailhouse rock.

9. Napoleon didn't last long in captivity, either...
Punching Judy knows where a hell of a lot of bodies are buried. She has made her mattress, now she needs to lie in it.

She's betrayed just about everyone she can by now, but she knows that if she messes with the junta she's a goner.

Bummer.

Maybe we can arrange a hot date with Manuel Noriega.

that bush whore can rot in hell - she put the interests of the GOP above the interests of American and that is TREASON in my mind - also, her lies helped get us into Iraq - she has a lot of blood on her hands. So jail food doesn't agree with her? :nopity:

16. As I know from people associated with the criminal injustice system...
prison food is deliberately overloaded with fat, starch and sugar (and often heavily dosed with sedatives) to keep the inmates in a compliant, self-disgusted and zombiod state. Men fight it by becoming exercise freaks, but women are typically not allowed such outlets and become enormously obese. This serves the additional purpose of totally destroying a woman's self-esteem. Whatever Miller's political sins, she has committed no crime and most assuredly does not deserve being subjugated to this sort of mistreatment -- particularly to the permanent ruination of her health.

She is protecting a person who leaked the name of a NOC. That's what's called being an accomplice.

21. Sorry but as a working journalist myself I have to disagree:
rats, snitches (and therefore many sources) are by definition sleazy: if one's decision to protect a source were based on moral evaluation alone, no expose' of organized crime would ever be written, and not a single investigation of U.S. politics (which in truth is one of the biggest harlotries on earth) would even be attempted.

25. you aren't protecting a source when they tell you deliberate lies
to deliver political payback to a whistleblower. She lost her right to protect a source because the source isn't one. The 'source' is a criminal using old tried and true to deliver a sucker punch, thereby breaking the law. she's a criminal.

27. Off topic -- I still disagree about Miller -- I've wanted...
for a long time to tell you how much I love your dog pictures: especially the dog on the right in the middle image, whose facial expression is a typical (and, to me, much beloved) look of canine affection combined with what is probably mild skepticism that any mere human could understand. But forgive me my non sequitur: I love dogs more than any life form on earth and have delighted in their companionship for most of my years. Indeed the great sadness of my life is that where I live now -- in "senior citizen" housing -- I am not allowed to have them.

26. I can't stand Miller, but I liked what Joe Wilson said today
on Randi Rhodes: Regardless of what you think of Miller as a journalist, don't forget the real reason she's in prison is because some coward in the WH won't step up and admit that he was her source.

43. It figures you are a "journalist"...
.. since "journalists" are the only ones who can't get it.

She is not protecting a "source". She did not write an article with the information he gave her so by definition he is not a "source".

She is protecting her ass, or someone else's. Just because she is a "journalist" does not make her above the law, and the law says "journalist" or not she is compelled to testify in any criminal investigation that the grand jury wants her to.

I might have some sympathy for her position if she were in fact a journalist. But just because your words get published in a newspaper, that doesn't make you a journalist. In her case, she has printed so many falsehoods, "propagandist" would be a better description and fuck her.

the idea of gloating over the destruction of a person's health is sad. the reality of u.s. prisons is obscene.

that said, i'm glad she has to deal with this reality for a while. hopefully she'll 'come to her senses'. who knows, maybe she'll become an advocate for prison reform

Little Judy Miller sitting in jail. What a pity. Judy, almost 1800 US young men and women have died for your lies. Rot in hell.

The press took many photos of Martha to laugh about, where are Judy's photos? There's only one other traitor I'd like to see in jail till he dies, Robert Novak.

Ok, so she threw her journalistic ethics out the window on the WMD issue. But her incarceration is bigger than her own career. So chalk me up for the "crying on the inside" crowd.

35. She isn't protecting "whistleblowers" or "sources"...she's protecting
some treasonous bastard that got one helluva lot of CIA agents KILLED.

Until she steps up to the mike and spills who this traitor to our country is, she can have all the stomach problems she gets.

SHE is a criminal of the first magnitude. She's NOT a hero or a scapegoat. She is doing this AGAINST our national security and the citizens of our country.

The media would have us belive otherwise....but we know that THE MEDIA is as complicit in this crime as the other bushmafia people are.

36. Fitz knows who her contact was, the person came forward and has
waived confidentiality. (This info I think I recall was in his filing to the Appeals Court.)

Judy wants to be a martyr/hero to the cause of "journalistic integrity" (something with which she's only passingly acquainted since she once previously burned a confidential source in print), and who knows what else she's covering.
