How the Democrats should handle Roberts' nomination?

They should look at this as the replacement for Rehnquist and pretty much a given. The fight must be on the next nominee. However, that does not mean they simply surrender on Roberts. They should make the Republican Party sweat. They should "politicize" it as much as possible. They should be open and vocal about womens rights and the good chance and likely probability that this nomination will be very anti-woman.

The real battle is for the next nominee. We should lay the groundworks for a woman to replace O'Connor. By educating people on Mr Roberts and the direction that the Court is headed, it would make it much more difficult for Mr Bush not to choose a woman for the next nominee. That is the best hope for women and for our nation.

But, the Democrats should look at it realistically. Roberts will be chosen, even if by Party line. However, Democrats should not surrender. They should be very vocal and unapologetic about "politicizing" the nomination. Yes, it is about politics. But, it is about womens lives also.

He's conservative for sure, but he's old-school conservative (not neo-con, not Dominionist). And his resume is pretty impressive to me.

From where I sit, he comes across as far more professional (regardless of party affiliation) than the typical Shrub appointee.

Some Dems may want to disown me for saying this, but I'm ok with guy. If all conservatives were like him, their conflict with us liberals would be more about reasoned argument than about raging irrational fan clubs.

But, the battle and the filibuster, if there is one, must be on the next nominee.

But we're just speculating on what Roberts is really like.

Going by his credentials and past decisions, I don't see him as THAT similar to Rehnquist. Rehnquist was an activist judge from the start. Roberts (at least on my limited research so far) seems more professional.



I could be wrong, as is true for anybody here. But that's how I'm seeing things so far.

We should tie the whole Rovebert nomination process to Bush's lack of credibility.

Democrats should also make a point of saying that all federal judges will be reviewed for possible impeachment the moment the GOP loses control of Congress.

The issues are quite simple, particularly when viewed from a Marxist point of view: Republican Party is a criminal enterprise. Conservatism is a subversive ideology. The free exercise of religion must not include teaching prejudice or bigotry from the pulpits, nor does it include trying to impose a theocracy in the United States. Extremist religious views are a threat to the social order!

They wanted a cultural war, and a cultural war they shall get! There is no room for middle-of-the-road appeasers in this war.
