FYI: RNC emailing on SCOTUS nominee
Know your enemy!
---------------------------

Dear ______,

Tonight, President Bush made one of the most important announcements of his Presidency: his nomination of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. to be a United States Supreme Court Justice. Judge Roberts is a highly qualified man with sterling judicial credentials. He is fair-minded and compassionate and understands his job is to faithfully interpret the Constitution, not to legislate from the bench.

President Bush selected Judge Roberts after an unprecedented outreach effort, consulting with Democrats and Republicans alike. He has been thorough, thoughtful and deliberate throughout the entire process.

Now he needs your help.

To ensure Judge Roberts is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I need you to do three things.

1. Call your senators, tell them Roberts has your support and deserves theirs.

2. Sign our petition in support of the timely confirmation of Judge Roberts.

3. Call talk radio, write a letter to the editor of your local paper and tell your friends and neighbors why you support the President's choice.

Judge Roberts has a record that demonstrates a commitment to faithfully applying the Constitution and not legislating from the bench. For more information on the nominee go to www.JudgeRoberts.com

The bottom line is the President needs your help. By taking the actions above, your elected officials, your party and your friends, family, and neighbors will know you stand with the President in support of this outstanding nominee.

It is imperative you do all you can to help Judge Roberts become the next Supreme Court Justice. Thank you for all your hard work.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman,
RNC Chairman

2. He didn't tell them the guy is anti-woman, anti-choice,
anti-environment and anti-civil rights. That's what we get to do!

3. You gotta hand it to the GOP. They've even got a website up already
They'll have Roberts confirmed before the Democrats have even agreed on an opposition strategy.

4. I received two forms of actions from the dems
long before this was posted. The only thing I hand to the GOP is their ability to get their backers liking their Kool Aid.

They also had a head's up on who the nominee was going to be while the media was running around crowing about the Edith's.. :eyes:

We'll hand it to them alright... but not with kudos to their stinking website! :+

edit to add (that was meant for Azathoth's comment that we should give them credit) Not to you Erika! :o

6. Mehlman understands one thing...
... when he says "call talk radio...."

Get that mighty Wurlitzer cranked up now. Get Rush slobbering all over the guy, etc.

There won't be one thing said about his actual record, but the talking points are all there:

Judge Roberts is a highly qualified man

sterling judicial credentials.

He is fair-minded and compassionate

faithfully interpret the Constitution

not to legislate from the bench.

The real talking points:

He's been a judge for very little more than two years and his 2001 nomination for the DC court was stalled for two years in the Senate, in large part because of his refusal to answer questions relating to his record.

He's spent a considerable amount of his career doing highly partisan political work.

He's written briefs and opinions that indicate clearly that he is anti-environment, anti-choice (including the statement in an opinion that Roe v. Wade was "wrongly decided" even though that comment had no bearing on the case at hand) and less interested in civil rights than most other SC justices in recent decades.

7. And, of course, he worked on Bush v. Gore for Smirk
The guy worked on the argument that became the most bogus decision in Supreme Court history - - so bogus that it was written into the decision that it couldn't be used as a precident for any other case....
