Democrats to hold Rove hearing

GOP: Move to detract from court nominee

WASHINGTON - Congressional Democrats will conduct an unofficial hearing today that may return public attention to White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove and any role he had in disclosing the identity of a covert intelligence officer whose husband criticized pre-war intelligence President Bush used to justify the war in Iraq.

Congressional Republicans complained Democrats arranged the hearing because the president's nomination of John Roberts Jr. to the Supreme Court this week has distracted much of Washington from developments in a federal investigation White House leaks resulting in the public identification of CIA agent Valerie Plame.

Democrats "will do everything they can ... to keep Karl Rove on the front page," said Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, the former chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, which develops the legislative agenda of the GOP leadership. "This issue deserves to be vetted, but it has been vetted for three years," he told Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill.

Amid the attention to the Supreme Court nomination this week, there have been several news accounts about a classified State Department memorandum central to the federal investigation of the White House leaks, a three-page document that reportedly contains information about Plame, identifying her as a CIA operative and the wife of administration critic Joseph Wilson in a paragraph marked "(S)" for secret.

Craig not as outraged as every other single American should be?:grr: They stay the party line w/o any thought to what they're really spouting and the ramifications to all of us.

Why are the Democrats picking on Rove?

The Rove/Plame/DSMs issue must be resolved before Robert's confirmation can proceed because the Rove/Plame/DSMs issue goes to the legitimacy of the Bush presidency. Bush's ability to govern is on the line right now.

Republicans are in denial about the significance of the Rove/Libby investigation. But it may spell the end for Bush. Republicans need to realize that Bush may not make it to the end of this term. If there is any doubt, it would be inappropriate for him to be naming a justice to the supreme court who would decide on issues related to the Rove matter. Without considering whether Roberts would be a proper candidate under other circumstances, his appointment probably should be delayed until we learn just how high up the Rove matter reaches.

duty to exercise oversight responsibilities of executive branch actions?

are playing this the right way and refusing to be manipulated. We have time to get to Roberts and this will help weaken the nomination because people are losing trust in the WH now and will not accept that Roberts was a good decision for the nominee.

Huh? Plame's name was leaked in 2003...and until a couple weeks ago the White House had lied over and over that Rove wasn't involved...
