No, it didn't happen.
But let's suppose that someone other than Rove disclosed Plame's identity to the media. Let's say it was a junior Democratic senator on the Intelligence Committee. What do you think the White House's position would be? What do you think "Larry Bud" Mehlman would be telling all of his little minions to be saying to the media?
What if the disclosure didn't break the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982? Don't you think that they might be suggesting that some other law might have been violated?
While Section 421 of that act specifically addresses "Protection of identities of certain United States undercover intelligence officers, agents, informants, and sources," what law covered these activities prior to 1982? Was it OK to out an agent before 1982?
There must be some other law that prohibits disclosing secret information of any type, especially during "wartime." (Remember - "I'm a war president."?)
All of these guys with security clearances have already signed agreements that they will not disclose the information that they have access to, and that's certainly not limited to the identities of CIA operatives.
We're letting the RNC shape the debate. It's time to take it back. Let's start forcing them to defend treason, not some specific law that is almost impossible to violate. Rove and Libby and who knows who else put our agents, their sources and methods, and the security of the American people at risk. Let them defend that. Let them defend treason. Let them defend traitors.
