When did John Roberts adopt his two kids?
I'm wondering this because of the article about him meeting with jebbie in 2000 during the recount--and i'm wondering if they adopted after getting a possible shoe-in for his assistance to bushie (and kids always make you look better).

am i being a little cynical here? yeah, i guess so. but after that hearing today about covert agents on cspan....well, i guess i'm just questioning EVERY move these people make--including possibly telling someone to get a couple kids quick!

2. I did read that Roberts at his own expense went to
Florida as a volunteer for Bush in 2000. Would Bush suggest a way for Roberts to improve his image so he could be nominated as a thank you for being so partisan and volunteering for the GOP cause?

3. Sen Hutchison
of Texas adopted her two children at nearly 60 years old.

She's also very closely aligned with the Bush/Rove machine.

Almost seems like an emerging pattern - MUST HAVE CHILDREN.

Never mind what happens to the poor little ones stuck with them for life.

It's all about the shell with this group - rotten fruit inside.

7. She adopted children at the age of 60?
OK. I guess she assumes the money she'll leave them will make up for no parents as they get older. The GOP have gotten really weird since they let the zealots take over the party.

4. LOL...
I remember the Republicans crying foul when Senator Edwards was talking in Wisconsin during the campaign and his two little kids started batting each other over the head with their big foamie cheeseheads!

It didn't look set up to me.. Edwards was getting bonked by the fighting cheese while he was trying to talk to the crowd..

5. NYTimes Article of July 21st
http://galenet.galegroup.com/servlet/SRC?txba=John+G+Roberts&vrsn=3.0&slb=SU&locID=txshrpub100186&srchtp=basic&c=1&ste=23&tbst=ts_bsc&tab=4&docNum=A134231678&fail=0&bConts=6

I found it through the wonderful, wonderful Harris County Public Library - so don't know if this link will get you there.

It's copyrighted or I'd post it here.

Long story short, Roberts and his wife have only been married 9 years. Sounds from the article like they either didn't try naturally or didn't want to wait due to their age. So they adopted.

They attend the same Catholic parish as Clarence Thomas and his wife.

Worth a read if you have the time, it's a fairly detailed bio.

11. thanks. i couldn't get your link but i looked on the nytimes
website and found this:

"In 2000 the couple adopted a daughter, Josephine, and a son, John, through what Ms. Torre said was a private adoption."
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/23/politics/politicsspecial1/23jane.html?pagewanted=2

now i just wonder when in 2000? (before or after he helped bushie's recount--before or after he was promised a top position--if he, in fact, was.)

15. also, does anyone know whether this is a first marriage?
a bit unusual for both to have never married at 40+ -

although, not unheard of since I myself am an over 40 never married -
but then I'm not a Republican.

10. I know I'm a cynical old fucker and all ......
... but I was mulling the same sorts of thoughts. Two perfect kids. Norman Rockwell type kids. Jacki Kennedy (wannabe) type wife.

I'm sure there are plenty of white babies up for adoption, but we now see so many black and asian kids being adopted ... at least around here.

I'm made to wonder ... kids .... or window dressing. Yeah, I know ... shitty thing to say. Real shitty.

But hey .... I thought it and I can't lie about that.

17. That two adopted kids thing has my hackles up, too.
Don't feel like saying why except that THE CAUSE OF THE HACKLING IS NOT ABOUT ANYONE HAVING OR NOT HAVING OR RAISING/NOT RAISING CHILDREN. It's about...other issues. Just so we're clear on that.

19. no, there is nothing wrong with adoption
i'm just questioning their motivation--
here's an example:
roberts & jebbie have a little meeting (more than one maybe)
jebbie says if my brother becomes president he can give you a great appointment--
everyone plans ahead, roberts & wife decide childless couple don't look good for right-wingers so they have to make themselves look like the perfect family.
which they do.
either before or after roberts goes to florida to help out with the recount.
bushie in. twice. supreme court opens up. ta da.
and look--roberts has the perfect wholesome look (especially with two kids!)

i guess i'm wondering what his real motivation was when the kids were adopted.
a supreme court appointment? or a family.

23. Maybe they, like thousands of other couples, had fertility problems.
This just doesn't seem like a fair question to me. Don't become like them.

24. The Foreign Adoption Opens Legitimate Questions
After all, the wife is associated with Liars for Lying (erm, Feminists for Slavery, or whatever call themselves). Why wouldn't thet adopt special-needs US-born children? Goodness knows there are plenty of those who could use a good home wth rich, powerful parents. Why did they go to a foreign country and adopt such Anglo-looking children? Could it be that a Latin American mother would have a harder time trying to regain custody of her children and stirring up a media stink? A US-born mother, whether she be a 'surrogate' or a relinquishing mother (which is usually coerced) may not be able to mount a successful challenge against two wealthy and powerful lawyers, but it's the kind of story the media loves. A foreign adoption avoids this, no?

25. i guess i'm just suspicious of so many of "their" motivations
and the fact that roberts & his wife both appear to be career professionals i'm just wondering if their motivation behind adopting kids had more to do with their professional appearance as they climb up the social/political ladder than the fact that they genuinely wanted children.

i am not doubting they had fertility problems. i'm questioning if they really wanted kids at all other than for photo-ops and to show all of us what a well rounded all-american family they are (you can't be an all-american family without a couple kids--and the perfect ideal is a boy & girl--blonde. we're the kids blonde?)
