McGovern believes Democrats have shot

1972 nominee remains immersed in politics

Given the surprises from last week’s Iowa caucus, George McGovern, the Democrats’ presidential nominee in 1972, wants to spend Tuesday night as he did last Monday — watching televised primary results, this time from New Hampshire.
George McGovern, 81, the Democratic nominee in the 1972 presidential race, reflects on his political career and discusses this year’s presidential candidates. ANDREW WEST/news-press.com

More media interviews are likely as well, along with work on the book he plans to finish writing this winter on Marco Island.

The book’s progressing well, but McGovern, 81, is also on a political merry-go-round powered by the Democratic primary season.

2. A truly great American.
Sad that we had as much of a problem electing Presidents in the 70s with integrity as we did in 2000 (ok, selected in GWB's case).

3. McGovern's comments about the field
I find this interesting

"He said Clark, Kerry, Edwards and Dean are all capable of defeating Bush.

Absent from that list is Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.
I don’t think a candidate who is so close to so many Republican positions can galvanize Democrats to turn out,” McGovern said.

While many party activists said they were stunned that 2000’s Democratic nominee, Al Gore, didn’t endorse his former running mate, McGovern said he thought Gore’s move was perfectly understandable.
“Gore didn’t owe Lieberman anything,” McGovern said."
