It's not an accident, it's a talking point. Bill O'Reilly had the following to say:

One major casualty in the war on terror is the liberal press in the USA. Don't believe the right-wing ideologues when they tell you the left still controls the media agenda. It does not any longer. It's a fact.

There was never any "liberal press". Editors and publishers have always been conservatives. The point has been supported by the same so-called scientific studies the conservatives quote to prove they've been oppressed.
