God Hates America
According to Fred Phelps, "God hates America" and "God hates fags". Phelps' Nebraska Baptist church who's website is www.godhatesfags.com is going to be protesting the funeral of a soldier here in Alabama sometime next week. The local College Democrats wanted to protest, but we caught wind from the mayor that it would be a bad idea. Any ideas of what we could do? We're joining up with the College Republicans and College Libertarians to raise money for the family (wife and 2 kids, 3 years and 10 months old.) What follows is the protest article in the local paper at http://www.oanow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=OAN/MGArticle/OAN_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784110949

At a time when his loved ones are making funeral arrangements for a dedicated family man killed defending his country, a Kansas minister is making plans to use the funeral of Sgt. Christopher Taylor as a platform to push his anti-gay agenda.
Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan sent out press releases Wednesday announcing that his group would picket and preach at the Opelika funeral. The release is filled with anti-gay language and is headed by the line “Thank God for Improvised Explosive Devices Killing Americans in Strange Lands.”

Phelps grabbed national attention with his disruptive messages at the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the who was murdered in 1998 in an anti-gay hate crime in Laramie, Wyo. Since then, he has taken every opportunity to spread his message.

What do homosexuals and a tragic war death have in common? Phelps has a theory.

Using words not suitable for this newspaper, Phelps said that the government has allowed gays to take over America. He claims that the government allowed his church to be bombed by gays. As a result, Phelps claims that “God is punishing the government by killing soldiers with bombs and sending them home in body bags.”

“We will be at the funeral to picket and and preach and let everyone know that these soldiers are dying because God is retaliating, picking off the soldiers one by one, the soldiers that are fighting for an America that is allowing homosexuals and sodomites to take over,” Phelps said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “We’ve been to seven funerals this week and we’ll be in Opelika to spread God’s word.”

Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller was not aware of the planned protest before receiving a call from the Opelika-Auburn News, but made it clear that he will not allow a hero’s funeral to become a circus.

“This is America and Mr. Phelps has a right to protest, we would never deny him that right,” Fuller said. “But we aren’t about to allow him to disrupt a funeral. We have the right to tell him where to go and to make sure that the protest won’t be in a position to upset this family.”

Fuller said he would have discussions with Opelika police Chief Tommy Mangham to have a plan to handle the possible protest.

3. Ask the family
what they would like you to do. Perhaps just calling or sending cards would be nice. Personally, I'd go to the funeral to support the family if that's what they want, these idiots be damned.

5. Any way we can get Phelps to endorse
Whoever the GOP frontrunner is in '08?

That'd pretty much make it a lock for us if he did.

4. Needless to say...
These are some sick bastards. Whether or not one agrees with the invasion, a funeral should never be disrupted like this. Especially a soldsiers funeral, and especially such a young soldier. One would hope that violence doesn't break out, but also, one shouldn'tr be surprised if it does. This guy Phelps is most certainly not a man of god.

6. There's a scene from The Laramie Project that really touched me
Locals dressed themselves as angels and formed a protective circle around the funeral proceedings.

7. He once wanted to erect an anti-Matthew Shepard monument...
after a fellow preacher in, I believe Denver or Salt Lake City, wanted to erect a Christian monument in a public park. Of course, if the city approved that preacher's monument, it'd also have to approve Phelps monument on 14th Amendment grounds as well, so to be consistent, the city voted not to erect any such monuments saying it was an endorsement of religion.

9. We scared him out of Oxford, MS!!
Judy Shepard came here to talk about hate crimes and this bitch followed to protest.

He brought his whole family down here and then when 200+ people showed up to do a counter protest, he didn't even show up.

Ha Ha Ha, but he wasn't expecting that from MS.

I'm telling ya, MS is just a step away from being blue. Hell even our 18-25 year olds voted for Kerry.

FU FP!

18. Another Victory - Glad to hear that things are changing.
Oxford Town - Bob Dylan
-----------------------

Oxford Town, Oxford Town
Ev'rybody's got their heads bowed down
The sun don't shine above the ground
Ain't a-goin' down to Oxford Town

He went down to Oxford Town
Guns and clubs followed him down
All because his face was brown
Better get away from Oxford Town

Oxford Town around the bend
He come in to the door, he couldn't get in
All because of the color of his skin
What do you think about that, my frien'?

Me and my gal, my gal's son
We got met with a tear gas bomb
I don't even know why we come
Goin' back where we come from

Oxford Town in the afternoon
Ev'rybody singin' a sorrowful tune
Two men died 'neath the Mississippi moon
Somebody better investigate soon

Oxford Town, Oxford Town
Ev'rybody's got their heads bowed down
The sun don't shine above the ground
Ain't a-goin' down to Oxford Town

14. but upon further reflection
Hate is always fear. I don't fear FP. I just find him exceedingly repugnant. There's a deeper psychology at work here in this Phelps. The deepest fear and loathing is always in reaction to what you find in yourself. Think of the monumental repression that produced this phenominon. It's really a tragedy what happened to this man. I pity the child that was Fred Phelps.

17. Yes, but they represent a very small minority and

most Christians would tell you that Phelps behaves in such unChristian ways that it is difficult to believe he has any understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
