DU'ers raise another $250 for Edwards (up to $950 now).
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 05:22 PM by AP
sgr2 just helped me reach my THIRD $250 target. (The 950 includes the 200 from the essay contest last week.)

Here's the thread in which sgr2 explains what influenced the large donation (it wasn't me):

Should we start a pool to guess how much DU'ers can raise for Edwards?

3. Well, here's the deal
I've told people this before, before Iowa I was going to go with Clark. I'd given money to Edwards first, back in mid 03, about $60.00, and I'd given about $100 to Clark towards the end of 03 (Anticipating a Dean vs. Clark race).

But I was so shocked and happy at what happened in Iowa, that I looked back at Edwards, started talking to people I knew (The Republican girl who says she'll vote for Edwards over Bush, The Republicans who brag about calling NH voters in support of Howard Dean, and the Republicans who say they fear Edwards the most). I went back, looked at CSPAN video, read articles, thought about the structure of the primaries, and finally made up my mind once and for all.

That's the reason for my contribution today.

4. From a whisper to a scream.
YEARGGHHH!

I really hope, and strongly suspect that lots of people are going to come to this same conclusion over the next two or three weeks.

with Edwards.

I love the contrast between Edwards in his football uniform and Bush in his Cheerleader outfit. If Edwards wins the nomination, I know about 100 fire-breathing Bush lovers who also love college football. They will all get those pictures in their inbox. For some those two pictures alone could change their vote.

You convinced me, I will make a donation to Edwards tonight.

6. DU is a great place.
We argue and debate and then we come to conclusions and then we do something about it.

8. One very minor point
That's a high school picture of Edwards. I don't think he played college football.

BTW, I directly donated $100 to Edwards last fall, and sport two bumper stickers on my little Infiniti. The honks of approval have really started to increase since Iowa, even here in red Nevada!

I'll cough up more, directly and to the DNC, if he's our guy.

9. That's Bush in high school also.
Bush was a cheerleader at Andover.

I grew up in the South where playing football is a right of passage into manhood. I laugh now and say, it would have been more painful not to play football in high school b/c I would have gotten beaten up every day. There are places where you are automatically assumed gay if you don't play football (not that there is any correlation between the two). Being a cheerleader is one step beyond not playing football. It is the ultimate in cissy to many southern men.

Publicizing Bush's cheerleading history will cause him to lose stature in the eyes of some southern voters.

10. "Bush was a cheerleader at Andover" -- such a simple sentence, yet...
...it provokes such laughter!

12. Apparently, not just to southern men
I went to USC where we have male Yell Leaders dressed just like GW in AP's picture. I was frequently envious, but only while watching them practice the one-handed lifts of the song girls!

When we ran an article about Yell Leaders in the student newspaper, we were flooded with cissy-themed letters to the editor. I decided to publish a few of them, then got surrounded by several Yell Leaders at a basketball game that night. I burst into laughter and asked if it wouldn't be more appropriate if they threatened me via megaphone. Somehow their sweaters and 150 pound average weren't exactly intimidating.

13. Will Republicans call Edwards "Breck Girl" after seeing this picture?
I don't want to make this into a gender or sexuality thing, but, c'mon! Bush is such a phony. He isn't serious. He isn't a tough guy. He's taken the path of least resistance his entire life...as this picture suggests.

14. And what looks worse? The megaphone? Or that stupid hat?
He looks like he and Jugghead are going to jump in the jalopy and head over to the drive-in with Betty and Veronica.

16. Agreed, but probably four years tardy
Cheerleading, comped into Yale, National Guard senior skip year, chicanery with Texas Rangers and oil industry...

Too bad DU wasn't around in 2000. We could have crammed at least some of it into the mainstream media, easily worth 500+ theftproof votes.

I saw Ben Stein use that Breck Girl tag last week, while conceding he was scared of Edwards. Edwards should reply with a good natured, self-defacing comment about how much older he's sure to look in January 2013, if granted two terms as president.

11. After sgr2's donation, another 275 has poured in.
Today is the biggest one day total from DU, and has seen the most people participating.

Including the 200 for the persuasive essay, that's 1175 from DU.

You would think they could get a better one.

But whatever, after SC, Edwards will be on Kerry's heels.
