Deputies: Slain wife told GI of affair (From yesterday's LBN story)
http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1309553

<snip>
A Fort Carson soldier apparently shot and killed his wife and then himself after she told him she’d been having an affair and worked as a stripper while he was in Iraq, investigators said Friday.

Friends and relatives, though, told the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper the couple had an “open relationship,” discounting the effect the disclosure of an affair would have had.

Sara Sherwood was killed Wednesday at the couple’s home near Fort Collins after leaving their 15-month-old daughter at a neighbor’s house.

The neighbor told Larimer County sheriff’s deputies investigating the deaths that Sara Sherwood intended to talk with her husband, Pfc. Stephen Sherwood, about their marriage.

1. may be a little darwin in this one
if you're working as a stripper and screwing around while yr hubby is getting his ass shot off in iraq, best to inform him of these activities through your attorney rather than in person

7. And maybe she had to work as a stripper to pay the bills, given
the military does such a shitty job of paying the troops!

And maybe the screwing part ain't exactly true, they just threw it in there to try to give him a reason to go off, other than PTSD.

You know, these asshats have been know to tell lies and distort the truth. And, the media repeats them like the good parrots they are. :argh:

I spent nine years in the Army. My husband spent 20. Nobody's wife HAD to work as a stripper. Nobody HAS to work as a stripper, just like nobody HAS to work as a "sanitation engineer." Some women just LIKE the money and the attention. Period.

2. Doesn't change the fact that PTSD probably had a thing or two to do with
this.

i.e. most people do not kill their mates upon hearing of an "affair" and if the couple were in an open or poly relationship as confirmed by friends and family he'd probably be less so inclined than most people.

In my mind they are both further casualties of the war.

3. "Open" and "Poly" are distinctly different concepts

Open is basically swinging or "dating" on the side.

Poly is short for polyfidelity, fidelity being the key word. A true poly relationship is built on mutual trust and respect.

Edit: to shed personal bias.

5. Uh yes I know by using the two as I did, I was trying to infer that it may

have been a poly relationship...the media, family, even some close friends of poly couples do not understand the difference.

Also not to seem arrogant or anything but I have been involved with poly relationships for the last 15 years and the bulk of my closest friends are poly.... I understand the difference well, but poly is more often then not these days shorthand for "Polyamorous" it puts the onus on the emotion of love rather than the loaded "fidelity", even though that may be only the connotative of the word, fidelity in of itself is a good thing.

Polyfidelity would also seem to be more of a set familial structure where the particapants never go outside their family unit for intercourse. They are almost always set up in multiple couple living situations as well. Friends who make a cohabitive familial structure and share the sex partners on a one to one basis. I might be wrong though its been a long time since I've hung out with any polyfidelists.

Polyamory is a bit different set up with much more leeway in regards to how individuals set up there relationships.

I think both are quite compelling for some folks....

Ok did I over explain myself or what?
:)

Sorry if I did, I care about this subject in more ways than one.

on edite: yeesh, was much worse than now.

8. Understand.
I can get a bit defensive when the topic comes up, usually it's in the form of criticism. I realized later I mis-intrepeted.

There's a whole world beyond monogamy, Wish we could converse about it more freely, without being judged.

4. “We do think that this particular group has...
probably endured greater stress because of the greater separation and the greater combat violence,”

over time, spouses change, which can be difficult for soldiers to deal with, especially if their relationship was troubled before the soldier shipped off for war. In Iraq, the 2nd Brigade lost 68 soldiers and had 400 wounded in often savage fighting with insurgents in Ramadi.
