So they FAILED on their constitution deadline...
Fluff as Condi may with praise for the progress, they FAILED. The Kurds want independence, the Shiites want control and the Sunnis want some hand in things. Worse, the Shiites can't agree to what degree theocracy will run their lives or what level of cooperation they want from Iran, the Kurds are reticent about admitting what they REALLY want from parts of Syria, Turkey and Iran, and the Sunnis are the minority locals who come from by far the greatest faction of Islam. The oil lies under grounds held by Shiites and Kurds.

They failed. Much as the Bushies demand that the trains run on time, this one is well beyond their grasp. Why is this not a huge story? Sure, they've agreed on a one week extension, but is that not a colossal failure even IF it can be realized?

Idiots. Assholes. Plutocrats beyond their depth.

1. It's a constitution, not a term paper.
Don't see why it needed a deadline in the first place.

I think the real tragedy will be if the Iraqi ends up divided or with any kind of theorcratic rule. Bush will have yet another MISERABLE failure on his hands.

2. Putting together a constitution isn't bad,
but it's real HARD WORK tearing one apart.

It's a constitution, not a term paper. I like that.

3. What other outcome could there possibly be?

5. Perhaps there could be a United States of Iraq
Kurdish-stan, Shiia-stan, Sunni-stan, Christian-stan, Secular-stan, and Miscellaneous-stan!

After exercising their "state's rights," all they'd have to do is come up with a national flag...

4. I wondered about the deadline myself. Why a deadline?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think their own provisional gov't imposed a deadline to complete the process. The real issue in the failure, as I see it, is the lack of a success story for Chimp & Co. to trumpet. So we get Condi et al praising them for their work thus far, and assurances of only one more week until they reconcile their remaining differences. And if you believe that, I've got a bridge for sale.
