Creatures at the top of the food chain don't evolve as fast - they don't need to, at least for a while. That's why sharks and certain reptiles and insects have been around as long as they have.

Ideas evolve too -

The very definition of progressive is that we allow our thinking to evolve with new information, we are open to new things and new experience.

In contrast, a social conservative has got his head jammed in the sand as far as it will go and doesn't want to even know there's a real world out there that you have to evolve with or die.

That's the real lesson of evolution. What doesn't change and adapt gets left behind. Or eaten.

Of course, you *do* know that individuals do not evolve, only populations evolve.

I only write this because so many people have very funny ideas about evolution substantially brought on by rampant misinformation by creationists and (shudder) Hollywood.

I was simply suggesting that perhaps the evolution of man took a forked path fairly recently in our development. One of those paths led to science and learning and enlightenment, and the other path simply stopped in a big clearing where everyone looks up into the sky with their arms outstretched and prays in unison for someone whom they can blame for their collective idiocy. Many of them still believe it was Clinton.

The real problem is the amount of memeic programming that will have to be undone after we kick these guys out of power. That's where the evolution has been occuring. Unfortunate for the world is the fact that the progressive movement has not siezed on the meme thingy. As Bush has said, "We've got to catapult the propaganda." ;-)

...is the idea that it necessarily progresses toward more complex or "advanced" forms of life. That in itself suggests that the process is "working" toward some kind of "goal".

Actually life forms change over time in response to changing environmental conditions. Species develop and change in order to fill available ecological niches.

The only way in which humans are more complex than other great apes is the structure of our brains. If increased complexity was the purpose of evolution, the most clever, intelligent, creative people would be the most reproductively fit. But statistics clearly show that people of average intelligence have the most surviving offspring.

It's cute to joke about the existence of people like George W. Bush being contrary to the notion that evolution progresses forward, but actually he's there because unfortunately there is a demand for his way of thinking. And that is because for reasons I cannot explain, intelligence is not always adaptive.
