Lawsuit unveils sender of anonymous campaign mailings

A Lincoln attorney went to court to unmask the person behind anonymous campaign fliers that landed in mailboxes before the May City Council election.

He learned this week it was somebody already on the council — Republican Glenn Friendt, who did not run for re-election.

The mailings targeted Democratic candidates Dan Marvin and Terry Werner. Marvin won a seat on the council, but Werner was defeated in his re-election bid.

Vince Powers, recently elected Democratic National Committeeman, filed a civil complaint in Lancaster County Court in May, alleging the sender violated state campaign finance laws by not reporting the money spent on the mailings.

An employee of the County Registrar's office, one Charlotte Mastrrangelo, hassled a youth group's attempt to have a voting info booth here in Marin City on Nov 2nd 2004. She told them that they neeeded to be 400 feet from the voting place. (Not true - they needed to be only 100 feet away.) She told them that the informational ballotts that the youth group planned to pass out could be handed to voters ONLY AFTER they had already voted. (This also was a lie.)Interestingly enough these information packets had been approved by one of Charlotte's own organizations, the Women League of Voters)

In Marin County we have the Diebold Opti-Scan system. One of theose running for the local hospital district board, Jonathan Frieman lost by less than seven hundred votes (The county received 101,000 ballots in this election.) The cost for Jonathan to have a recount was held to be $ 161,000.

Ah yes Freedom isn't free - it is damned expensive.

Oh, and I take it for granted but should not assume you'd know it - Charlotte is a registered Rebublican...
