Presidential Candidates with "problem" siblings
Somebody said that Kerry has a "felon brother", Cameron Kerry.

Bush* has Neil with plenty of problems. Clinton had a brother with problems, as did Carter. I don't know about Reagan....

Does it mean the candidate tries harder in life to compensate, somehow?

Any other candidates have "problem" siblings?

Richard Nixon had a younger brother who was a real loser and involved in all kinds of illegal activity (but so was his brother the president). He was even put under FBI surveillance at one point.

Michael Dukakis had an older brother, Stelian, who suffered from mental illness back when the Duke first started running for office in the 1960's. Stelian even tried to sabotage his brother's campaign for the legislature. Sadly, he was killed by a hit and run driver while riding his bicycle.

20. It's defamatory to spread rumours like that. Cam Kerry isn't a public
official.

Cam Kerry probably isn't going to sue anyone, but, people, get a grip on your rumour mongering.

Even if you're not going to get sued, you should behave like you respect the law.

Jimmy Carter's idiot brother was never called president.

17. Billy Carter read a book a day
according to a PBS documentary on Jimmy Carter that I saw last year. Sure Billy drank and promoted Billy Beer - but that's a pretty harmless thing, all in all.

We would be fortunate to have a president as educated as Billy Carter - rather than the incurious puppet currently in the Oval Office.

19. I apoligize to Billy Carter
Who, after all was said and done, not a bad person. Unlike Jeb Bush's brother(s).

8. Everyone has a "problem" sibling
I have one, my husband has two.

Many of my friends who have several siblings have a sib who is a "black sheep", or who has been divorced more than once, or has money problems, or substance abuse problems, or has been in trouble with the law.

It doesn't reflect badly on a public person if they have a sibling who gets in trouble. I think it can make that public person more tolerant and empathetic, because they have had the experience of trying to help a family member who has screwed up.

14. What I was wondering
was if there was a correlation where people who had siblings who had problems somehow wanted to make up for it in a big way - by becoming the president. Kind of like a family dysfunction reaction.

I certainly wasn't saying that I thought that the sibling's problem reflected badly on the candidate. On the contrary - I thought it was possible that the candidate would try harder than someone without such a family member.

And as you suggest - can also be more tolerant, etc. Not a bad thing.

16. Well, you know a lot of the Dean people have this pattern
of coming up with cute little sayings and spreading them around DU; "poop" and "I heard that before" come to mind.

This is just the newest one, I think the best they can hope for is it getting picked up by Drudge - seems right up his alley.

18. Nixon also had a brother
Donald, who was something of an embarassment. Nothing to make the papers, but he was always trading on the Nixon name to put together business deals. Tricky avoided being seen with him in public for years.

Billy Carter was the very biggest screw-up, he signed a contract to lobby for Libya. He should have stuck with Billy Beer (SLOGAN: "It's the best beer I've ever tasted, and I've tasted a lot!").
