Best way to combat these insane gas prices? Simple:
Don't go fill up!

If you're at or above 1/2 tank and it will last you several days, don't go fill up!

Don't add to the hysteria!

Also, work to CONSERVE and curtail driving to make that last longer.

2. carpool if you can
and if you can't, ask your neighbors if they need groceries, etc, that you could get for them when you go to the store.

3. And take the bus when you can. Or walk. Or ride a bike.
My daughter's bus stop is about 3/10 of a mile away and I normally drive over there to pick her up if I'm home from work early. Not anymore (unless it's pouring down rain or 10" of snow). I'll be walking. Good for me anyway.

I'll sometimes drive a mile or so to the closest Walgreens for picking up prescriptions or getting a gallon of milk and some bread. No more. I'll be walking.

4. And slow down!!
I still see people racing up to the red lights. Duh!! I hope to see some driving changes in my neck of the woods. People in Detroit suburbs are in such a rush all the time. They fly by you and cut you off and then they pull into the grocery store. Is the store giving away free food or something? Yikes. Slow down America.

6. And skip the even-numbered gears if you have a manual transmission.
I shift from 1st to 3rd to 5th now. I rev the odd gears a couple hundred RPM more, though, but it's better overall, at least for me.

And coast to a stop, in gear, as much as possible. Most new cars shut off the fuel injectors when in gear and coasting (if you have a computer that shows MPG, notice how your MPG skyrockets when you coast)
