John Kerry Appeals for Help for Katrina Victims
John Kerry Appeals for Help for Katrina Victims
August 31st, 2005

John Kerry sent out an email to the members of JohnKerry.com appealing for help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Here’s the text:

Dear Friend,

This is a time for all Americans to pull together and do everything we can to assist people whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

If you haven’t acted already, I urge you to join in delivering immediate help to the people who need it most. One way to do that is to support the relief and recovery efforts of the Red Cross with a personal donation. Donate to the Red Cross. - https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

As we hold those who are going through so much pain and suffering in our prayers, I know you’ll do everything you can to reach out and help.

Sincerely,
John Kerry

P.S. There are a host of other volunteer relief agencies doing essential life-saving work in this emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is coordinating the federal government’s response efforts, has posted a list of recommended groups on its website.

The following statement is from John Kerry’s Senate website:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the thousands of families affected by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina’s unprecedented devastation has cost those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi their homes, their loved ones, even their lives. Our great nation must come together to comfort and bring relief to those in the Gulf Coast suffering from this blow. Local leaders and National Guard forces have bravely started the effort, but they need all of our help.{/b}

3. Nice to the point request for donations. I donated.
It is alway nice to hear from John Kerry! Especially, after that awful uninspiring speech from President Bush today.

5. My inbox is full of similar requests
And that's fine ...... but where is the deserved criticism leveled at our hapless and uncaring government? That's aimed not only at Kerry, but also all the others that send out these pleas.

Make some real noise. Show some outrage. Do the unexpected ... not the trite.

Sorry to rant on Kerry. I like him. I like the others who sent similar requests. But they accomplish little. Being an opposition to the gang in power would do far more.

I know ... I know ... political calculus.

By the way ... for anyone (like me) who is not a Red Cross fan, try America's Second Harvest. They have the absolute lowest overhead of any national charity and they get the job done ... food delivered to mouths.

They're geared up for this catastrophe and WILL get the job done.

6. That will come later
Right now, helping people and offering support is the job of oir leaders. Assigning blame where it so richly belongs will come once the immediate life-threatening peril will pass, as it should. Be patient; it'll come.
