McHale sends in the Navy! Only two ships?
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 01:26 PM by norml
Earlier this afternoon, Paul McHale, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, said DoD anticipates sending a 500-bed mobile hospital to the New Orleans area, as well as USNS Comfort, a Baltimore-based hospital ship. Comfort is expected to leave its homeport Sept. 2, arriving in the region around Sept. 8, McHale said.

McHale said a request for the military to contribute as many as 800 people to assist the American Red Cross with shelter support "is under active consideration," and DoD has 1. 5 million cases of field rations available if needed.

As the military responds to immediate needs, Scherling said, DoD planners are looking ahead so they're prepared to respond to needs yet to be identified. "We're leaning forward and anticipating what is going to be needed," she said.

McHale echoed that message during a joint news conference today in which Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and representatives of various federal agencies outlined the extent of the disaster response.

1. Living on Taratupa gave Quentin McHale a greater appreciation for...
hurricanes than the Bush Administraton has shown.

By Sunday it was apparent that this was a Big Deal, yet navy ships left Norfolk only on Wednesday?????? They should have left no later than Monday morning.

As for the hospital ship, better late than never. Sure, the emergency is now, but remember, it will get much worse, than better. The needs will only increase.

Carrier Harry S. Truman left today

Bataan on station now.

Salvage ship Grapple on the way (I think, don't quote me)

I actually SAW the Truman leave (IN PERSON), so I can vouch that it is on route.

5. BREAKING CNN: Boat rescue operation suspended
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As police and National Guard troops struggled to restore order Thursday in New Orleans, federal emergency teams suspended boat rescue operations because conditions in the flooded city were too dangerous, officials said.

Troops and police have been working to evacuate tens of thousands of people, who are growing weaker and more desperate each hour.

Thousands of people have been sleeping on streets, interstate access ramps, bridges or any dry spot they can find.
