Who would be better at handling the aftermath of Katrina?

It was a tremendous natural disaster, and I expected casualties and property loss, and I'd be panicked as well. What I did not expect was complete and total disregard by our federal government!

I would have gotten buses, private and public, mobilized to evacuate.

I would have had NG and military on alert, ready to move in as soon as landfall.

I would have asked cities nationwide to mobilize first responders at landfall.

I'm not pretending--none of the above was done before landfall and it's just insanity.

If you don't know how to do something, the next best thing is to know who does.

back on the 70's when i was with the corps of engineers we surveyed civil defense sites in 5 states. that's all i did, shelter design and management, disaster routing of supplies, restocking, assessment of buldings, medical and communication facilities. it was mostly for nuclear attacks, but almost every place i went to was used for natual disasters subsequent to my leaving the administration.

i never slacked off in my job because i imagined that just once, even once if i made a mistake someday someone might die because of it. i even fired a guy i caught making up data on a project because he was too lazy to actually survey a site i checked on after he was supposed to visit.

our mission was folded into what became FEMA

what has happen over the last 5 years has been the almost total destruction of FEMA.

jesus christ, i have more experience than that clown brown on this subject and he runs FEMA.

Even I knew I could comandeer buses, agriculture, and other agencies to help out. I'm a freaking library assistant and I knew that.

I gotta believe in Hell now. It's the only way I can cope.
