I wanna be a politician, what're my chances of a successful career?
For some reason ever since I was a little kid I wanted to be a politician. As I've grown my passion for politics has increased tremendously and now I'm beginning to take college level political science courses this fall. I'd like to get some feedback and comments from people who know more than myself. It seems I can't really associate with any one party, because I have different views on each topic. I grew up in a working class family with little money, but I'm putting myself through college majoring in political science and minoring in business. Alot of people are telling me the odds are stacked against me, but I've been told that all my life and overcome alot of obstacles to get where I am today. I've made a short list of my views on some of the larger issues our nation is dealing with right now. Maybe you guys could tell me which political party I'd be most successful associating with since I don't really fit into any of them. I'm not naive enough to think I can make it to any respectable position unless I join up with one of the two (possibly three) parties and work from within.

I am for gun rights and opposed to most gun control.
I am for abortion and a woman's right to choose.
I am for same sex "marriage".
I am for the separation of church and state.
I am against the war on drugs.
I am for stronger security on our southern border.
I am against affirmative action.

What do you guys think?

1. Nothing on economic issues?
Most of that sounds like Libertarian stuff. Some of which I agree with, btw...

What's your stance on economic/safety net/labor issues?

3. Soon
Nothing on the economic issues yet, just based on these things right now. I do have opinions on economic issues but they're not firm enough for me to stay they wouldn't change. I'm pretty open minded and not afraid to admit if my logic is flawed, then make steps to correct it.

2. You'd be assassinated if you somehow managed to get elected.
And the odds of that would be very low due to unequal media coverage, smear campaigns if you can even get anyone to notice you exist, get on the ballot, and so on.

You need to be a multibillionaire promising repeals of taxes for the super-rich and sucking corporate cock nonstop to get a shred of airtime.

12. Even though most people agree with his positions.
Which is odd. Why can't people like the OP be elected? Most people do not fall on either the complete left or the complete right of the fence.

Other than the OP's stance on gay marriage (most people prefer some sort of legal union, just short of out-and-out marriage), I think most people in this country would agree with him.

13. the stances would be misrepresented with no chance for correction
Just like Kerry's stances on numerous issues were completely misrepresented and silenced. Likewise Gore.

5. You're socially liberal/libertarian
which would make you compatible with the Democratic or Libertarian parties, depending on your economic stances. Welcome to DU!

9. I want to be one too and I've finished my campaign song already...

I am tired of being poor;
Let me in the statehouse door;

Edit: My song is short, but sweet.

The first question you need to ask yourself, if you should decide that you have a better shot at winning, if you switch parties and run as a republican. Is the very first question, that every republican politician must ask himself..."WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?"

10. I see "poitician" and "leader" as they are currently defined
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 08:02 AM by blondeatlast
as antithetical. Your mileage may differ, but looking at current events, we have way too many with political science degrees in the field already.

Need proof? Look at the handling of the Katrina aftermath.

Right now, I'm just damn disgusted with politicians, period.

Welcome to DU anyway. Hopeful that you shift your dream to leadership.

11. You lean Dem
You will learn more by getting active in your state and local politics than in school, I recommend you do both. Join both parties and go nowhere as that screams "I lack conviction!".
